The film takes place in the late 1800's in England and revolves around the main character, Pamela who has no interest in ever marrying.  She has a difficult time finding work but finally gets hired to work for a woman's magazine.  Soon along with covering such topics as sewing and cooking she begins to lead discussions on gender equality, child labor, medical care etc and soon she is now viewed as a leader of the "woman's movement".  On top of this, she is faced with the pressure of being a single mother having a child out of wedlock which was highly frowned upon during that era.
