Wealthy steel magnate John Chadburne wants his infant son Philip to lead a normal life, so he arranges for the child to be raised as an orphan by the blue collar Mason family. Years later Philip applies for a job at Chadburne Steel Works, and is hired as a lowly shop assistant. John decides to tell his son about his birthright after he holds the job for a year, earning his place through hard work and self reliance. Philip is ground down by his job. Frustrated and angry he becomes a union agitator, threatening both the business and his father's well-laid plans.
