Bill Rust is on the run from the sheriff and arrives into a town where a cross-country horse race is going to take place in a couple of days. Bill saves a young boy named Bobby as he tries to drive a buckboard. From there Buck Townsley starts to fight with Bill, which results in them betting each other on their own horse winning the race. Bobby's sister, Mary Lou offers her ranch to Bill for training his horse and is so thankful to him for saving her brother.  Bill runs into old Jim who used to be in a gang with him, but Bill changed his ways to be a better person. Jim forces him to throw the race or he will bring him to the sheriff. Bill decides it’s best to throw the race until he finds out Mary Lou is betting everything she has.
