The hero of the story is Lobo, a big, beautiful dog with a she-wolf mate and a family of pups. Lobo is owned by Pierre LaPlant. When sheep are found dead, killed by a predator, the sheepherders believe Lobo is the culprit since he was seen near the bodies. They don’t know that Lobo is tracking a mountain lion, the real villain.
Eventually even Pierre is convinced that Lobo is killing sheep and prepares to put him down, but Pierre is attacked and killed by the mountain lion. The sheepherders, now convinced Lobo is a rabid killer, go to the sheriff who mounts a posse to track down the dog, putting himself and his posse in jeopardy as they enter the mountain lion’s territory.
