Released by MGM in 1932, Birthday Blues is an Our Gang / Little Rascals comedy short film directed by Robert F. McGowan.

It’s Dickie and Spanky’s mom’s birthday and when their cheap dad wont’ buy her a birthday present the boys hatch a scheme to earn the money to buy her a dress.  To make the $1.98 they need they decide to bake a cake with prizes inside and then sell slices for ten cents each.

Unfortunately the party turns into a real mess and when the boys’ father comes home he throws the gang and other kids out of the house and proceeds to give Dickie a spanking.  When the dad finds out why the boys were trying to make money he feels bad, and buys a dress for his wife.  To the boys’ delight she thinks the dress the dad bought is too fancy for church and instead wears the one the boys bought her!
