A lumberjack, Bill West, and his friend Laramie witness two trappers stealing furs from traps. When the trapper who originally owns the traps turns up dead, Billy figures that the two men he saw earlier, Loup LaTour and Chick Carson, are the murderers. Billy runs into the duo in town, getting shot in a confrontation, and retreating to a trading post manned by the beautiful Marna and her family. Marna has been the victim of unwanted advances by Loup before, and when Loup shows up again, Billy must make a stand for the woman he has come to love.
John Wayne is visible in Rough Romance briefly as a lumberjack, although his role is uncredited.
Some sources claim John Wayne was given a props credit on this film, however that would have been unusual, as he would have been the only person to get such a credit in 1930.
