Erich von Stroheim stars as The Great Gabbo, a ventriloquist who slides into madness. His life is complicated by the darker urges expressed in the personality of his dummy, Otto. Gabbo's lovely assistant, Mary, is in love with him, but ultimately leaves because of the abusive nature of Otto's personality. Without Mary's calming influence Gabbo is driven over the edge and takes his anger out upon Otto.
