The film takes place during 1903 in Belgium where widowed Madame Bodamere marries a wealthy American who convinces her to leave her young daughter, Jeanne, with Marie, the nurse. is married to a rich American, who insists that she leave her young daughter Jeanne behind with the child's nurse Marie. Many years later, she returns to look for Jeanne, but Marie lies to her, informing her she is dead, so she will not have to give her up. Marie sends Jeanne back to America after the country is invaded in 1914, with a letter to her mother explaining her lie. Jeanne brings along two young orphans and finds her mother living in a mansion. She does not believe Jeanne is telling the truth and becomes a maid in her own house.
