Kira is a young man, one of a small group of wandering Yaquis, all that is left of their once mighty race. Kira decides to go visit a group of miners at the river
, and there meets Delancey Cahilll and Elijah Haines. Kira is converted to the white man's ways by the preacher, who gives him a supply of tobacco and a Bible. When Kira returns to his tribe he tries to convert the other members to the white man's ways. Unused to cigarettes, Kira's voice is affected and when he tries to sing love songs to the Chief's daughter he is rejected, but Ocallo woos her and wins her hand.
The Yaquis are attacked by a group of Zunis, but Kira refuses to fight, believing peace is the best way. The Yaquis defeat the Zunis, and Kira is scorned and cast out by his tribe. As the Yaquis begin a march to take over the Zunis previous encampment, Ocallo and his bride soon fall behind because of her physical frailty. Ocallo leaves her temporarily, and she is attacked by a gold prospector. Ocallo returns in time to rescue her, and stabs the prospector, killing him. When the prospector's pals hear the commotion, they rush to see what has happened. Kira hears them approaching, and forces Ocallo and the Chief's daughter to hide as he sets himself up to take the blame.
