Walt Disney DIRECTOR

Walt Disney was an American film director, producer, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, and founder of The Walt Disney Company. Throughout his career he made innovations in animation, as well as invented some of the world’s most loved cartoon characters. His popular features earned him fifty nine Academy Award nominations and twenty six Oscar wins, both of which break records by afar. Disney moreover served as a well respected showman, theme park designer, and philanthropist.

Walter Elias Disney was born December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, the fourth of five children. When he was four, his family moved to Marceline, Missouri to live on farmland. It was here that Disney discovered his love for drawing, even selling his creations to neighbors at about the age of seven. In 1911, his family relocated to Kansas City where he and his sister attended the Benton Grammar School. This was where he met Walter Pfeiffer, a member of a theatre family, and was introduced to vaudeville and motion pictures. Disney then began spending lots of time at Pfeiffer’s house, becoming engrossed in the dramatic arts. Soon after, he started attending Saturday courses at the Kansas City Art Institute.

In 1917, Disney moved back to Chicago, where he enrolled at McKinley High School and took night classes at the Chicago Art Institute. For his school newspaper, he drew highly patriotic cartoons. When he was sixteen, he dropped out of high school to join the Army during World War I. However, being far too young, Disney was rejected and instead volunteered for the Red Cross Society. However, he still continued to follow his passion of art, even covering his Red Cross Society ambulance with doodles and sketches.

In 1919 Disney went back to Kansas City to start his artistic career, beginning as an advertisement cartoonist. In 1920 he partnered up with a fellow employee at his advertisement agency, Ubbe Iwerks, to form the short lived “Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists.” Soon after, Disney made another business venture when he formed his own animation studio, “Laugh-O-Gram”, and came out with a number of cartoons like “Little Red Riding Hood” (1922), “Goldie Locks and the Three Bears” (1922), and “Cinderella” (1922). That company also failed in short time, and Disney decided to move to Hollywood.

He quickly went into a partnership with his brother, Roy, in what would eventually turn into the Walt Disney Company. Iwerk also joined them for some time. Their first success came with the “Alice Comedies”, which turned Disney into a newly recognized Hollywood figure. Hundreds of these popular shorts came out between the years 1923 and 1927. In the middle of the series’ success in 1925, Disney hired Lillian Bounds to paint and ink celluloid. They fell in love and married that year, later bearing two children.

In 1927, the company’s first popular character was born: Oswald Rabbit. Unfortunately, a dispute with the cartoon’s distributor caused Disney to lose the rights to Oswald. Nevertheless, in 1928, Disney pioneered his most iconic character: Mickey Mouse. He even voiced the animation until 1946. Mickey’s first role came in the cartoon movie “Plane Crazy” (1928), but it was never officially released as it had no sound. The picture “Steamboat Willie” (1928), which premiered at the Colony Theater in New York, therefore became the mouse’s debut film and also the world’s first synchronized sound cartoon.

Mickey Mouse quickly became the symbol of the Walt Disney Company, appearing in numerous cartoons, comic strips, video games, books, toys, full feature films, and merchandise of every type. He went even further to become a cultural icon, one many even say symbolizes America.

Due to the large success of “Steamboat Willie”, Disney created seventy five shorts that were a part of the “Silly Symphony” series. The numerous films, which included efforts such as “The Skeleton Dance” (1929), “Flowers and Trees” (1932), “The Three Little Pigs”, and “The Wise Little Hen” (1934), helped introduce other popular characters like Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald.  The “Silly Symphonies” stopped coming out in 1939, but Mickey and his pals continued to appear liberally in Disney cartoons, and even today hold a place in the hearts of many.

In 1934, Disney came up with a new idea: animated pictures that ran the same length as feature films. While many expected his plan to fall short, after the release of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) they were all proved wrong. The film won critical acclaim, public adoration, as well as an Honorary Award from the Oscars for Disney’s innovation.

While he continued creating animated shorts, he also began producing more full length high budget classics like “Pinocchio” (1940), “Dumbo” (1941), and “Bambi” (1942). Around the time these came out, World War II was occurring. Disney’s studio began putting out special films for the U.S. Armed Forces, which included short films with special messages and health-related pictures. However, the many military pictures like “Victory Through Air Power” (1943), “Education for Death” (1943), and “Health for the Americas: Cleanliness Brings Health” (1945) (which served as his last directorial effort) failed to bring in much revenue, and the studio began to face some financial troubles.

Following the war, Disney started creating inexpensive package films. He sold the cartoon shorts to theaters and some of the more popular animations that came included were “Saludos Amigos” (1942), “The Three Caballeros” (1945), “Fun and Fancy Free” (1947), and “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” (1949). “The Three Caballeros” combined Disney’s pioneer blend of animation and live action to create a distinctive new art form, which is also found in his “Song of the South” (1946) and “Mary Poppins” (1964) starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

In 1950, Disney’s company released its first all live action feature, “Treasure Island”. It was soon followed by “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (1954) starring James Mason, Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre, and “Bon Voyage” (1962). He additionally began filming the award winning “True Life Adventure” series. With films like “The Living Desert” (1953), “The Vanishing Prairie” (1954), “The African Lion” (1955), and “White Wilderness” (1958), he opened the viewer’s eyes to the need to protect the environment and wildlife. Nevertheless, Disney continued to put out his popular animated films, such as “Cinderella” (1950), “Peter Pan” (1953),“Lady and the Tramp” (1955), “Sleeping Beauty” (1959), and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians” (1961).

He additionally was one of the first producers to jump into television, with his series “Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color” (1954). He started the show to promote his southern California based theme park, Magic Kingdom (later Disneyland), which opened a year later. Further TV productions by Disney include “The Mickey Mouse Club” (1955) which launched acting careers for several people such as Annette Funicello and Paul Peterson just to name a few and “Zorro” (1957) starring Guy Williams.

By the early 1960's, the Disney empire had become a major success, and Walt Disney Productions was the top family entertainment producer in the world. Disney never faltered in his commitment to his company; he worked on pictures until his death.

In 1965, Disney showed his philanthropic ways by turning his attention to the development of America’s urban life. He personally directed the design on an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, which was planned to be a showcase of American innovation in the form of a theme park. The EPCOT theme park was to be placed in the Walt Disney World Resort, another amusement park in the works that was to be stationed in Florida. Unfortunately, Disney was unable to aid in its production for very long, as his chain smoking habit had caught up with him and given him lung cancer. After several sessions of chemotherapy, Disney collapsed on November 30, 1966 in his home. He was revived and sent to a hospital in Burbank, California, but died there on December 15, 1966, ten days after his sixty fifth birthday.

Even though Disney has been gone for over fifty years, his legacy has remained strong. The Walt Disney studios and theme parks have become multi-billion dollar industries, representing his name justly. As well, he has brought joy and happiness the hearts of so many that have relished in his many imaginative pictures. For his bright innovations and achievements in both television and motion pictures, Disney has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in addition to his numerous film festival, Golden Globe Awards, Emmy, Directors Guild of America, and Oscar Academy Awards. The man that started one of the most famous empires in the world can never be forgotten – he was one of a kind. The clever Disney’s words cannot be disregarded either, for he once stated “I hope we’ll never lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse.”
