MARTIN SCORSESE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Martin Charles Scorsese is an American film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Also a film historian, he has translated his passion for film into successful screen works. His highly personal films additionally delved into his New York life experience, as well as encompassed classic Hollywood and New French Wave themes.  One thing can be for sure, the intensity and honesty of all of his pictures is one that has not been matched, and probably never will be. Due to the great qualities his films possess, he has won an AFI Life Achievement Award and numerous awards from the Oscars, Golden Globes, and Directors Guild of America. As well, he founded the World Cinema Foundation and is president of the Film Foundation.

Scorsese was born November 17, 1942 in Flushing, New York. As a child, he suffered heavily from asthma and was thus kept inside by himself while his peers were outside playing. In order to make their son feel better, his parents often took him to the movies. Quickly, Scorsese became obsessed with the cinema, even drawing his own story boards. However, at age fourteen he decided he wanted to become a priest. His aspirations did not last long though, and into the 1950s he became seduced by rock n’ roll. His behavior also started changing, and he was kicked out of seminary.

Fortunately, this let Scorsese return to his first love, movies. He attended NYU and graduated with a bachelor’s in English and a few student pictures like “What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This?” (1963) and “It’s Not Just You Murray” (1964) under his belt. He quickly moved into NYU’s master program to get a degree in film in 1966. His theatrical debut came soon, with his full length “Who’s That Knocking at My Door” (1967), an intimate depiction of life on the streets of where he grew up, New York’s Little Italy. However, it did not actually enter theaters until 1969.

Meanwhile, Scorsese began teaching at NYU. Here he helped fellow student Michael Wadleigh on his documentary, “Woodstock” (1969), which went on to win the Best Documentary at the Academy Awards. Soon after, the director moved to Los Angeles where he became friends with the highly successful and influential movie people of the time, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Brian De Palma, and Francis Ford Coppola. He was also met by Roger Corman, who asked him to direct his film “Boxcar Bertha” (1972). The director managed to find an acting spot in it, too, which would prove to be a common occurrence in many of his features.

After, Scorsese started working on his first acknowledged masterpiece, “Mean Streets” (1973). The film, which starred the ever present Scorsese actor Robert De Niro, observed the conflicts between Little Italy’s church and street life. In 1974, after criticism that the director wasn’t capable of putting out a woman’s feature, Scorsese directed Ellen Burstyn in her Academy Award winning role in the widow drama “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore”. He then returned to his New York based Robert De Niro films with “Taxi Driver” (1976). The dark, urban thriller following one man’s descent into lonely insanity really established the director as a force in Hollywood.

Scorsese attempted his first large budget film following, the Liza Minnelli, Robert De Niro musical flop, “New York, New York” (1977). However, despite flaws, it developed a cult following. Scorsese returned to documentary making with “The Last Waltz” (1978), a film about the breakup and farewell concert of the rock group The Band. Soon after, the director regained his high Hollywood standing by way of “Raging Bull” (1980), a film based off of boxer Jake La Motta’s autobiography and once again starring Robert De Niro. It earned the director his first Oscar, as well as seven other Academy Award nominations.

His next feat, and fifth collaboration with De Niro, “King of Comedy” (1982), portrayed a desperate comedian willing to go to great lengths for his obsession, fame. Another dark comedy followed, and “After Hours” (1985) became a popular 1980's cult film. After, Scorsese turned to the more commercial side of filmmaking with the “Hustler” (1961) remake “The Color of Money” (1986).  It managed to earn critical praise and an Oscar for its star, Paul Newman.

For his last picture of the decade (aside from a directing assignment for a segment in “New York Stories” (1988)), Scorsese reminisced on a favorite childhood subject: Jesus. His four year project, “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1988), stirred up controversy due to its supposedly blasphemous depiction of the life and death of the messiah. While many Christians were highly offended and protested, their rampages turned out to offer free press for the film and it went on to earn a Best Director Oscar nomination.

In 1990, Scorsese went back to a more familiar topic in his gangster flick “Goodfellas”. The violent film adapted from Nicholas Pileggi’s novel Wiseguys, of course, boasted De Niro as a lead. The year following, because of a deal he made with Universal to put out a more commercial film in exchange for the chance to make “The Last Temptation of Christ”, the classic Hollywood thriller “Cape Fear” (1991) came out. It turned out to be a box office smash. His subsequent picture (apart from his production efforts and acting roles), “The Age of Innocence” (1995), was a romantic period piece based off of an Edith Wharton novel about high 19th century New York society. While critics applauded, the box office offered no such praise. Scorsese jumped into modern time after that, with a greedy and deceptive Las Vegas feature called “Casino” (1995). In the same year, he directed, produced, wrote, and hosted his own film about the history of cinema, entitled “A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies” (1995).

Scorsese turned his attention to Tibet’s 14th Dalai Lama for his next feature, “Kundun” (1997). The film, while stunning to the eye, lost viewers near the end and consequently lost fan following at the box office. The director put out another weak film after, the fast paced Nicholas Cage medical drama “Bringing Out the Dead” (1999).

In the following decade, Scorsese returned to his most popular subject: gangs. The epic “Gangs of New York” (2002), starring Cameron Diaz and Leonardo DiCaprio, helmed numerous Academy Award nominations, but failed to take home any. The director teamed up again with DiCaprio to film “Aviator” (2004) and it also earned a large number of Oscar nominations. 2004 additionally offered Scorsese the opportunity to voice a character in the animated under water adventure “Shark Tale”.

2005 saw “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan”, a documentary tracing the life of legendary music sensation Bob Dylan and his impact on society. However, the following year he once again found his way back to the mobster drama with “The Departed” (2006), which gave him an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Directing. In 2008 the director worked on another documentary, this time one that focused on the Rolling Stones called “Shine a Light”. A man of repetition, he collaborated a fourth time with DiCaprio on 2010’s psychological thriller “Shutter Island”.

His later films include “Public Speaking” (2010), “Silence” (2013), and “Sinatra” (2013), as well as other production jobs and acting positions. Even though Scorsese is still turning out pictures, he has already been awarded with a copious amount of honors like Directors Guild of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Golden Globe’s Cecil B. DeMille Award, and Writers Guild of America’s Evelyn  F. Burkey Award, among an uncountable amount of others. As well, for his many cameo appearances, production efforts, and directorial feats, Scorsese has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

As the great filmmaker once said: “Movies touch our hearts and awaken our vision, and change the way we see things. They take us to other places, they open doors and minds. Movies are the memories of our life time, we need to keep them alive.”
