HAL ROACH BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
 
Hal Roach was born Harry Eugene Roach on January 14, 1892 in Elmira, New York. At a young age he was impressed by a presentation of the notable humorist Mark Twain. After a stay in Alaska as a gold prospector and mule skinner, he followed an ad asking for experienced cowboys to serve as technical advisors on Universal Studios movies. Roach moved to Hollywood and spent the next year picking up extra jobs in comedy films, where he met Harold Lloyd. They became friends, and in 1915 they began producing, directing, and writing comedic shorts through Pathé with a small inheritance that Roach had come in to. In the same year he also married his second wife, actress Marguerite Nichols, whom he would remain with until her death.

The first character the producer created was “Will E. Work”, an unsuccessful branding. His second, however, the Charlie Chaplin rip-off “Lonesome Luke”, proved to be a winner. Throughout 1916 and 1917, the Luke character (played by Lloyd) became increasingly popular. Roach was actually becoming increasingly disappointed with the character, and in 1917 it was dropped in favor of Lloyd’s new persona, “Glasses”. He was met with even more box office success, and as a result, Roach renegotiated with Pathé and began his own production company, Hal Roach Productions.

Although already having the most popular and highest grossing comic in films, the producer added even more stars to his employee list, including Stan Laurel, Patsy Kelly, Snub Pollard, and Ernest 'Sunshine Sammy' Morrison. He also employed such writing and directing talents as Fred Newmeyer, Alf Goulding, and Charley Chase. However, he was having increasingly growing problems with his biggest earner, Harold Lloyd. In the meantime, he was creating one of the most famous comedy series of all time, “Our Gang”, one of the longest running short subject series ever.

In 1924 Roach finally cut ties with Lloyd, instead taking up Charley Chase as his new top comedian. Many of his Chase features were directed by Leo McCarey, who became the producer’s supervising director. McCarey was the first one to fully realize the potential of the power duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy (Laurel and Hardy) in 1926, who formed together to make the most successful two-reelers at Roach Studio.

In 1927 Roach stopped releasing his films through Pathé Exchange, and began working with Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer. With sound coming in 1929, the producer was not intimidated, and instead cut a deal with RCA Victor and Western Electric so that he put out the most technically skilled talkie shorts on the market. With all of his success, Roach was able to create several new series: The Taxi Boys, The Boy Friends, and Thelma Todd, Zasu Pitts among others.

By 1938, with the decreasing profit for short films, Roach’s shorts were officially phased out. The last one he ever made was Our Gang’s “Hide and Shriek” (1938). Although he had previously produced sporadically full length features, he now focused only on motion pictures. In 1938 he also switched distribution from MGM (due to business issues with the Italian Fascist government) to United Artists. The producer found success with his films, like “Topper” (1937), “There Goes My Heart” (1938), “Captain Fury” (1939), “Of Mice and Men” (1939), and “One Million B.C.” (1940).

In 1941 Roach pioneered the idea of streamliners – forty-five minute features made especially for double bills. Unfortunately, most of them failed to catch on with audiences. In the last two years of World War II, the producer received a Colonel’s commission and gave his studio to the government in order to create military training films. In 1947 Roach finally returned to work for theatrical features, but could not regain his footing. He did, however, become the first Hollywood motion picture company to go to all-color production.

In 1948, with his studio entrenched in debt, Roach re-established his studio as television production company with his son, Hal Roach, Jr. Some of the TV series produced at the studio include “The Amos ‘n Andy”, “The Abbott and Costello Show”, “Blondie”, “The Stu Erwin Show”, and “Racket Squad”.

The producer sold his studio to his son in 1955, retiring from active production. Soon after, the studio fell to pieces, and went bankrupt in 1959. Roach, Sr. returned to reorganize the studio, creating but a few more projects and mainly focusing on licensing, remake rights, and motion picture and television backlog rights. In the years that followed, the company changed hands many times, with the controversial colorization of films, more bankruptcies, and the addition of his classic films to public domain, VHS, and DVD.

In 1984 Roach won the Academy Awards’ Honorary Award in recognition of his unparalleled record of distinguished contributions to the motion picture art form. At the 42nd Berlin International Film Festival, he was given the honorary award of the Berlinale Camera. He also has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, both for his contributions to motion pictures. On November 2, 1992, two months before his 101st birthday, Hal Roach passed away from pneumonia.
