William Windom was born on September 28th, 1923 in New York City, New York to parents Isobel Wells and Paul Windom. After high school he went on to study at Williams College and also the University of Kentucky and then chose to join the United States Army during World War II. Once he completed his service he chose to continue his higher education at Fordham and Columbia University, both in New York. He then decided to pursue a career as an actor.
He went on to study at the American Repertory Theatre and soon made his Broadway debut in a small role in the play, "Henry VIII" and "What Every Woman Knows". Windom continued to gain more stage experience working on Broadway in such productions as "Yellow Jack", "White Rabbit" and "Alice and Wonderland".
As his career progressed, he continued to perform as a stage actor but also began to gain some experience as a television actor on such shows as "Robert Montgomery Presents" (1950) "Lights Out" (1950) and "Hallmark Hall of Fame" (1951).

He is most remembered for his role in the weekly series "My World and Welcome to It" (1969) for which he won an Emmy for Best Actor.
Not only was he an exceptional stage and television actor, Windom also made numerous film appearances on such features as, "To Kill a Mockingbird' (1962) starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch with Brock Peters, Mary Badham, Philip Alford, Alice Ghostley, Robert Duvall and Paul Fix just to name a few, "One Man's Way" (1964) also starring Don Murray, Diana Hyland, Carol Ohmart and Virginia Christine, "The Detective" (1968) starring Frank Sinatra, "Brewster McCloud" (1970) starring Bud Cort and Shelley Duvall and the television movie "The Man" (1972) starring James Earl Jones, Martin Balsam, Burgess Meredith, Lew Ayres, Barbara Rush, Janet MacLachlan and Georg Stanford Brown.
As his appearance began to change he was still able to adapt to new roles and never was type cast as one particular type of character. He was a regular on the series, "Murder, She Wrote" (1984) as well as on "Parenthood" (1990).
Even today he continues to work with some of his latest work being on the television series, "Star Trek New Voyages: Phase III" (2004) and "Yesterday's Dreams" (2005).
