WILLIAM SCHALLERT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
William Schallert was born on July 6th, 1922 in Los Angeles, California. His mother was Elza Emily and his father was Edwin Schallert who worked as the drama editor of the "Los Angeles Times" and was also the dean of West Coast critics.
After high school he developed an interest in acting and enrolled at UCLA in 1942. When he earned his degree he became involved with the Circle Theater. Some of his early stage credits include, "Rain".
By 1947, Schallert made his film debut in, "The Foxes of Harrow" followed by roles in such films as, "The Man from Planet X" (1951), "The Red Bade of Courage" (1951) starring Audie Murphy, "The Tarnished Angels" (1958), "Blue Denim" (1959), "In the Heat of the Night" (1967) starring Rod Steiger and Sidney Poitier, "Speedway" (1968) starring Elvis Presley, "The Jerk" (1979), "Teachers" (1984) and "Innerspace" (1987).
Not only did he add film roles to his resume, Schallert appeared in a variety of television series such as, "The Rat Patrol", "Gunsmoke", "The Patty Duke Show", "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis", "The Waltons", "Bonanza", "Leave it to Beaver", "Love, American Style", "Get Smart", "Lawman", "Twilight Zone" and "In the Heat of the Night".
William Schallert has also done voice over work for a number of radio and television commercials and the television series, "Jumangii" and "Wildfire" among others. Most recently he has appeared on the television series, "How I Met Your Mother" (2007) and "True Blood" (2008-2011).
In addition to his acting, he also served as president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1979 through 1981, and remains involved in the industry today with no intentions of retiring. He has married only once to Rosemarie Diann Waggner whom he wed in 1949 and together they have four children.
