William Conrad was born on September 27th, 1920 in Louisville, Kentucky with the birth name John William Cann. His father owned a theatre and the family relocated to California when Conrad was a young boy. Throughout school he excelled in drama and literature and so upon graduating from high school he found work at a Los Angeles radio station KMPC as an announcer, writer and director.
Conrad served during World War II as a pilot and when he completed his service to his country, he left the US Army Air Force with the rank of Captain. He was also a producer and writer of the Armed Forces Radio Service during his time in the military.
After the war Conrad returned back to working in radio with a variety of programs. He played Marshall Matt Dillon on a western old time radio show called, "Gunsmoke" for a nine year run and other credits included, "Suspense", "The Damon Runyon Theater", "Lux Radio Theater", "Nightbeat" and "Fibber McGee and Molly".
