WALTER CATLETT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Walter Catlett was born on February 4th, 1889 in San Francisco, California. His career in entertainment began as a vaudeville performer and later also gained some experience in opera.
In the mid 1920's he began working in the film industry. Some of his early roles included, "Second Youth" (1924) starring husband and wife team Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, "Summer Bachelors" (1926) starring Madge Bellamy, Allan Forrest and Matt Moore, "Why Leave Home?" (1929) starring Sue Carol, Nick Stuart and Dixie Lee, "Married in Hollywood" (1929) co-starring J. Harold Murray, Norma Terris and Tom Patricola, "The Big Party" (1930) starring Sue Carol, Dixie Lee, Frank Albertson, Richard Keene, Elizabeth Patterson and Douglas Gilmore and "Aunt's in the Pants" (1930) with Cissy Fitzgerald.
As his career progressed he is most remembered for his roles in the films, "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (1942) starring James Cagney, Joan Leslie, Walter Huston, and Richard Whorf, Irene Manning, George Tobias, Rosemary DeCamp, Minor Watson, Frances Langford and Jeanne Cagney and "Bringing Up Baby" (1938) starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Barry Fitzgerald, May Robson, Jack Carson, Ward Bond and Charlie Ruggles. Other notable roles included, "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (1936) starring Gary Cooper, Jean Arthur, H. B. Warner, Ruth Donnelly, George Bancroft, Lionel Stander and Douglass Dumbrille, "The Quarterback" (1940) starring Wayne Morris, Virginia Dale, Lillian Cornell, Edgar Kennedy, Alan Mowbray, Rod Cameron, William Frawley and Jerome Cowan, "Manpower" (1941) starring Edward G. Robinson, Marlene Dietrich, George Raft, Frank McHugh, Barton MacLane, Ward Bond, Eve Arden and Alan Hale Sr., "Give Out, Sisters" (1942) starring The Andrews Sisters, Donald O'Connor and Peggy Ryan, Dan Dailey, Grace McDonald, William Frawley, Edith Barrett, Marie Blake, Charles Butterworth, Irving Bacon, Jason Robards Sr. and Fred 'Snowflake' Toones, "Fired Wife" (1943) starring with Diana Barrymore, Robert Paige, Louise Allbritton and Walter Abel, "Mr. Reckless" (1948) co-starring William Eythe, Barbara Britton, Ian McDonald, Lloyd Corrigan, Nestor Paiva and James Millican, "The Inspector General" (1949) starring Danny Kaye, Walter Slezak, Gene Lockhart, Barbara Bates, Elsa Lanchester, Alan Hale Sr. and Rhys Williams, "Father Takes the Air" (1951) starring Raymond Walburn, Gary Gray, James Brown and Florence Bates Raymond Walburn, Walter Catlett, Gary Gray, "Honeychile" (1951) with Judy Canova, Eddie Foy Jr., Alan Hale Jr., Roy Barcroft, Roscoe Ates, John Forrest 'Fuzzy' Knight, Irving Bacon, Claire Carleton and Karolyn Grimes and his last film role in 1957 was in, "Beau James" portraying Gov. Alfred E. 'Al' Smith along with Bob Hope, Alexis Smith, Vera Miles, Paul Douglas, Darren McGavin and George Jessel.
In addition to his film work, Catlett also appeared in a couple television series later in his career such as, "Climax!", "The Abbott and Costello Show", "Walt Disney's the Wonderful World of Color" and the television movie, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn".
He was also responsible for playing the voice of Foulfellow the Fox in the Walt Disney film, "Pinocchio" (1940).
Walter Catlett married twice throughout his lifetime, first to Zanetta Waltrous and when this marriage came to an end he wed Ruth Verney. He passed away on November 14th, 1960 after suffering from a stroke in Woodland Hills, California.
