WALLACE BEERY BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Wallace Beery was born on April 1st, 1885 in Kansas City, Missouri with the birth name Wallace Fitzgerald Beery. He had two brothers, William and Noah Beery Sr. who both also went on to become working actors. At the age of sixteen he joined the circus with the Ringling Brothers and worked as an assistant elephant trainer. After two years of working with the circus he then relocated to New York City and found work in musical variety shows.
Beery then found work on Broadway and traveling in stock companies. He then decided to relocate to Hollywood and see if he could get involved in the film industry. In 1915 he worked on the film, "Sweedie Goes to College" (1915) a series. This role followed with a number of film roles such as, "Patria" (1917), "The Four Horsemen of the Apolalypse" (1921) featuring Rudolph Valentino and Alan Hale, "Robin Hood" (1922) starring Douglas Fairbanks, "The Sea Hawk" (1924) and "The Pony Express" (1925) co-starring with Betty Compson, Ricardo Cortez and George Bancroft.
He was working with Paramount under contract and they decided to put him back into comedy films such as, "Behind the Front" (1926). When talkies came about, MGM saw something in Beery and chose to sign him to a contract with them. He was cast in "The Big House" (1930) which was very successful and earned him an Academy Award nomination. He then worked on, "Min and Bill" (1930) which was one of the biggest film money makes of the year.
His career was highly successful with his next role on, "The Champ" co-starring with child actor Jackie Cooper, winning the Oscar for Best Actor and again put on an amazing performance in, "Treasure Island" (1934) again starring with Jackie Cooper plus gifted actors Nigel Bruce, Lionel Barrymore and Lewis Stone. Roles were coming at him from all directions in films such as, "Flesh" (1932), "Dinner at Eight" (1933), "Wyoming" (1940), and "Barnacle Bill " (1941).
As he began to age, his career began to slow down and on April 15th, 1949 he passed away in Beverly Hills, California from a heart attack at the age of sixty four. He was interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California.
Although he had a incredibly successful professional career, his personal life with women was not as successful. Wallace Beery married twice, first to famed actress Gloria Swanson from 1916 through 1919 and then to Rita Gilman from 1924 through 1939 and having one child together. He then remained single the remainder of his life.
