VERA MILES BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Vera Miles was born on August 23rd, 1929 in Boise City, Oklahoma with the birth name Vera June Ralston to parents Burnice and Thomas Ralston. She attended school in Pratt Kansas and Wichita, Kansas and graduated from Wichita North High School in 1947.
When she entered a beauty contest in 1948 and won the title, "Miss Kansas" she then began getting involved in an acting career. Miles first started with small roles on some films and television shows.
When two well known directors, Alfred Hitchcock and John Ford spotted her, Miles' career began to take off. She changed her name to Vera Miles directly after arriving in Hollywood so she would not be confused with another actress on the circuit, Vera Ralston. She first starred in Ford's film, "The Searchers" (1956) alongside John Wayne, Ward Bond, Jeffrey Hunter, Natalie Wood, John Qualen, Harry Carey Jr., Walter Coy, Henry Brandon, Ken Curtis and Hank Worden and then Hitchcock put her under a personal contract and cast her in the film, "The Wrong Man" (1956) co-starring Henry Fonda, Anthony Quayle and Harold J. Stone. She soon followed with an appearance in, "Psycho" (1960) starring Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, John McIntire, John Gavin, Martin Balsam, Frank Albertson, Simon Oakland, John Anderson, Mort Mills, Pat Hitchcock, Lurene Tuttle and Vaughn Taylor and then Hitchcock used her on a film working alongside, James Stewart and John Wayne in, "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962) which also starred Lee Marvin, Edmond O'Brien, Woody Strode, Andy Devine, John Carradine, John Qualen, Strother Martin, Willis Bouchey, Ken Murray, Carleton Young, Denver Pyle, Shug Fisher, Robert F. Simon, Jeanette Nolan and Lee Van Cleef. Even though both Ford and Hitchcock favored Miles, due to her various pregnancy's she was prevented from getting cast in a number of roles.
In 1966 Vera appeared in a Walt Disney prodction "Follow Me, Boys!" starring Fred MacMurray, Lillian Gish, Charlie Ruggles, Ken Murray, Kurt Russell, Parley Baer, Elliott Reid, Donald May and Luana Patten, which was the last production Walt Disney released before he died of lung cancer just two weeks later on December 15, 1966.
As her career progressed, Miles continued to star in a number of films such as, "The Outer Limits" (1963) and "The Fugitive" (1963). Even well into the 1980's, Miles was still going strong in the film industry with more starring roles on the film, "Murder, She Wrote" (1984) and "Psycho II" (1983). She also was highly involved in television work making various appearances on such series as, "Ironside" (1968) and in a couple, "Columbo" episodes along with Climax!" (1954-1958), "Medic" (1954), "Checkmate" (1961), "Zane Grey Theatre" (1960), "Wagon Train" (1959-1964) and "Burke's Law" (1964). In 1995, Vera Miles finally retired from acting.
Vera Miles married three times throughout her lifetime, first to Bob Miles from 1948 through 1954 and had two daughters with him, Debra and Kelley. Her second marriage was to "Tarzan's Hidden Jungle" actor Gordon Scott from 1956 through 1960 and the couple had another child together, Michael Scott. Miles, third and final marriage was to actor Keith Larsen from 1960 through 1971 and again she had another son, Eric Larsen.
Miles still lives in California but refuses any public relations offers, including interviews and public appearances and has maintained a low profile since her retirement.
