Valerie Harper ACTOR


Valerie Harper was born on August 22nd, 1939 in Suffern, New York born to parents Iva and Howard Donald Harper.  Due to her fathers type of work, her family relocated all over about every two years causing her to attend a number of different schools.   
Her career in entertainment began working as a dancer with the corps de ballet at Radio city Hall.  Soon she was working as a stage actress and also joined a comedy troupe in Chicago.
In the 1950's and 1960's she began working on Broadway with her stage debut in the musical, "Li'l Abner".  After some experience on Broadway, Harper felt she was ready to try working as a television actress and moved to Los Angeles, California in 1968. 
Some of her more well known roles were on "Mary Tyler Moore" (1970) and "Rhoda" (1974).  She also made appearances on such television movies as, "Farrell for the People" (1982), "Don't Go To Sleep" (1982) and "An Invasion of Privacy" (1983).
She also earned a name for herself as a film actress with roles on, "Chapter Two" (1979), "The Last Married Couple in America" (1980) and  "Freebie and the Bean" (1974) for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe for "New Star of the Year" in 1974.
For her work on "Mary Tyler Moore" Harper has won four Emmy Awards as well as a Golden Globe Award.  She is also well known as being a very strong supporter of woman's rights, being involved in the Women's Liberation Movement throughout the 1970's and 1980's.  Valerie ran for President of the Screen Actors Guild in 2001, but lost to Melissa Gilbert, however she serves on the Hollywood Board of Directors of SAG.
She has married twice throughout her lifetime.  First to Richard Schaal from 1964 through 1978.  Valerie then married her second and current husband, Tony Cacciotti in 1987 and together they have one child who they adopted, Cristina who is also a working actress.  Her latest roles are playing, Terri Hatcher's aunt on the television drama, "Desperate Housewives" and on, "Fixing Pete" (2011).  She continues to remain living in Los Angeles and working in the industry today.
