TONY CURTIS BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Tony Curtis was an actor born with the birth name Bernard Schwartz on June 3rd, 1925.  His parents were Hungarian Jewish immigrants, Helen and Emanual.  His father was the owner of a tailor shop and they lived in a small apartment in the back of the business.  Curtis had two brothers and sadly, his mother was diagnosed with schizophrenia and would often lash at the three children.

During the onset of the great depression in 1933, Curtis's parents could not longer financially care for the three boys, therefore, Curtis and his brother Julius were placed in a state institution where sadly, Julius at only the age of twelve was hit by a truck and lost his life.

Curtis was so distraught over the loss of his brother, he was adamant to create a better future for himself.  He attended high school at Seward Park in Manhattan.  He completed his education and then joined the United States navy and served in World War II.  He was honorably discharged from the military and then decided to take acting lessons in New York at the New York School for Social Research.

In 1948, he was privileged enough to land a contract with Universal Pictures at the age of twenty three.  Tony took on the stage name Anthony Curtis and began working on a number of small film roles such as, "Criss Cross" (1949) co-starring Burt Lancaster, Yvonne De Carlo, Dan Duryea, Stephen McNally, John Doucette and Richard Long, "City Across the River" (1949) with Stephen McNally, Thelma Ritter and Luis Van Rooten, Jeff Corey, Richard Jaeckel and Richard Benedict, "Francis" (1950) starring with Donald O'Connor, Patricia Medina, Chill Wills, ZaSu Pitts, Ray Collins, John McIntire, Edward Franz, Robert Warwick and Frank Faylen, "Winchester '73" (1950) starring alongside James Stewart, Stephen McNally, Will Geer, Dan Duryea, Shelley Winters, Rock Hudson, James Best, Charles Drake, Jay C. Flippen, John Alexander, Millard Mitchell and Steve Brodie and "No Room For the Groom" (1952) with Piper Laurie and Don DeFore.

In 1951 he had also married a Hollywood actress, Janet Leigh and she actually played a significant part in him obtaining numerous film roles.  Throughout the late 50's and early 60's, Curtis was cast in, "Houdini" (1953) which he co starred with his wife Janet Leigh along with Torin Thatcher, Sig Ruman and Connie Gilchrist.  Some other films he had roles on were, "Sweet Smell of Success" (1957) with Burt Lancaster, Susan Harrison and Martin Milner, "Operation Petticoat" (1959) co-starring Cary Grant, Arthur O'Connell, Robert F. Simon, Dick Sargent, Dina Merrill, Gene Evans, Joan O'Brien, Gavin MacLeod and Frankie Darro and "Some Like it Hot" (also 1959) which starred Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, George Raft, Joe E. Brown and Pat O'Brien, and one of his best performances that he received a large amount of praise for was his role in, "Boston Strangler" (1968) with Henry Fonda, George Kennedy, Murray Hamilton, Jeff Corey, Sally Kellerman, Alex Rocco, Mike Kellin, William Marshall, Hurd Hatfield, John Cameron Swayze and James Brolin and the epic spectacular film "Spartacus" (1960) starring Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons, Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton, Charles McGraw, Harold J. Stone, Woody Strode, John Gavin, Herbert Lom, John Ireland, Nina Foch and Peter Ustinov.

He had two children with his current wife, Jaimie Lee and Kelly, but then he made the mistake of having an affair with a seventeen year old German actress, Christine Kaufmann and his marriage ended in divorce in 1962.  He went on to marry Kaufmann in 1963, however in 1968 the couple divorced.  He strangely enough decided to enter into another marriage shortly after with a 23 year old model, Leslie Allen.  Again, this marriage did not last either and throughout his lifetime he would choose to enter into three more unsuccessful marriages.

As he moved on with his career into the 70's, his roles became less significant.  He was cast in various low profile films and television shows.  It was his struggle with drugs and alcohol that were causing him to head in the wrong direction both with his professional and personal life choices

He made the choice in 1982, to clean up his act and headed in to rehabilitation.  When he became clean he decided to continue to pursue acting but also other interests as well.  He became a fine arts painter and also was an author of two autobiographies that were both published.  His final film role was in, "David & Fatima" (2008) also starring Cameron Van Hoy, Danielle Pollack, Merik Tadros, Anthony Batarse, Ismail Kanater, Sasha Knopf, John Bryant Davila, Ben Kermode, Allan Kolman and Martin Landau.

Curtis was struggling with a recurring battle with obstructive pulmonary disease as well as in 1994 he had undergone heart bypass surgery.  Tony Curtis passes away September 30th, 2010 from a heart attack in his home in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 85.  He was survived by his sixth wife, Jill VandenBerg and his children.

Although, Tony Curtis was never awarded an Oscar, in march 2006 he did receive the Sony Empire Lifetime Achievement Award.  he was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the motion picture industry.

The last years of his life he focused more on his love for painting then his acting career.  His canvas work nowadays goes for about $25,000.  One of his paintings "The Red Table" is on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City
