TOM CRUISE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Tom Cruise was born on July 3rd, 1962 in Syracuse, New York with the birth name Thomas Cruise Mapother IV to parents Thomas Mapother and Mary Lee Pfeiffer. He was the only boy out of four children born into a very religious family. Before the age of fifteen his family had relocated so many times he had actually attended fifteen different schools throughout the United States and Canada.
He originally had goals of pursuing a career as a priest but while enrolled in high school in Glen Ridge, New Jersey he became interested in acting after he was denied a place on the wrestling team due to a knee injury. When he completed high school he relocated to New York City in pursuit of a possible career as an actor.
He attended the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City where he studied drama along with also learning more about the art at the Actors Studio.
His film debut was in 1981 in the film, "Endless Love" starring with Brooke Shields, Don Murray and James Spader, a very small part, but nevertheless a chance at working on the big screen following immediately with "Taps" (1981) starring with acclaimed actor George C. Scott, an up and coming Sean Penn and also Tim Hutton and Ronny Cox.
1983 brought about the cult classic "The Outsiders" starring several newcomers to acting including Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez to name a few. It was during this time period that Martin Sheen (Emilio Estevez's father) took Tom under his wings as a mentor while Cruise lived with them for a period of six months til he got his feet wet in the movie industry and resided in their home as a beloved member of the family and they are still close to this day. "Risky Business" (1983) costarring with Rebecca De Mornay was a teen comedy/drama with the soundtrack having more intrinsic value than the film itself featuring "Old Time Rock and Roll" by Bob Segar, "Hungry Heart" by Bruce Springsteen, "Every Breath You Take" by The Police and also included songs by Muddy Waters, Phil Collins, Journey, Prince and Jeff Beck.
Within five years he was so adored by fans and starring in some of the most successful films such as, "Top Gun" (1986) starring with Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan and Tom Skerritt, "The Color of Money" (1986) with Paul Newman and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, "Rain Man" (1988) with Dustin Hoffman and Valeria Golino and "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989) co-starring Kyra Sedgwick and Willem Dafoe.
The 90's began with Tom starring in "Days of Thunder" (1990) starring alongside Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid and Fred Thompson with cameo appearances by NASCAR drivers Richard Petty, Rusty Wallace and Harry Gant. Next came "Far and Away" (1992), a Ron Howard directed adventure, action, drama and romance film starring with Nicole Kidman again emmigrating from Ireland to seek their fortunes in America during the Land Run of 1893.
"A Few Good Men" followed lated that year with another all-star cast consisting of Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland and Cuba Gooding Jr. taking place at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as a young JAG lawyer assigned to defend two Marines accused of a capital offense.
In 1993 Tom starred in a legal psycological thriller film "The Firm" starring alongside Jean Tripplehorn, Gene Hackman, Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, Hal Holbrook, Gary Busey, Wilford Brimley, David Strathairn and Terry Kinney.
As his career progressed he had become one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood earning around fifteen million dollars per film. He appeared in, "Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles" (1994), "Mission: Impossible" (1996), "Jerry Maguire" (1996) starring with Renee Zellweger, Kelly Preston and Cuba Gooding Jr., "Mission Impossible II" (2000), "Vanilla Sky" (2001) costarring Penelope Cruz, Kurt Russell and Cameron Diaz, "War of the Worlds" (2005) "Mission Impossible III" (2006) and he even earned an Academy Award nomination for his role in, "Jerry Maguire".
He was always raised religious and in 1990 he made it known to the public his Catholic beliefs and the important role religion plays in his life. Tom embraced the Church of Scientology and is very well known for his generosity. Cruise has donated to such charities as, The Ashley Flint Fund, The Tsunami Relief Fund and Themoms biz Diabetes Fund.
Cruise has married a total of three times. His first marriage was very brief from 1987 to 1990 to actress Mimi Rogers. He then married another very famous and beautiful actress, Nicole Kidman in 1990 whom he met on the set of "Days of Thunder" (1990) and they adopted two children together before divorcing in 2001. His third and current marriage is to Katie Holmes in 2006 and they remain together today with one daughter, Suri who was born April 18, 2006.
Tom has received a number of honors so far throughout his acting career. He was chosen by Empire Magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history in 1997 and that same year was also voted Best Dressed Movie star. In 1991 he was in the tabloids again chosen by People Magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World. He was also the first actor ever to star in five consecutive films that all grossed $100 million in the United States alone.
Tom Cruise currently lives with his wife and daughter in Beverly Hills, California and Telluride, Colorado and his latest film role, "One Shot" is in post production and scheduled to release in 2013.
Tom has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to the Moving Picture Industry.
