TIPPI HEDREN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Tippi Hedren was born on January 19th, 1930 in New Ulm, Minnesota with the birth name Nathalie Kay Hedren to parents Bernard and Dorathea. She had one sister, Patty Davis. Her father ran a general store in their town and her mother worked as a school teacher.
As a teenager, Hedren became involved in modeling working as a fashion model. When still in High School, her parents relocated with her to California. When she graduated and turned eighteen she moved to New York City in search of a career as a fashion model.
Hedren's film debut as in, "The Petty Girl" (1950) which was a musical comedy. Her modeling career in itself was very successful, appearing on the covers of various magazines such as Life.
In 1952, she was working on a commercial on, "The Today's Show" when she was discovered by Alfred Hitchcock in 1952. He chose to cast her in her first film, "The Birds" (1963) which earned her both as golden Globe Award as well as a Photoplay award for most promising newcomer. This film followed by a role in "Marnie" (1954) which was not as successful as her first major film. During the filming of, "Marnie" Hitchcock tried to pursue a unsuccessful attempt at a relationship with Hedren which made things uncomfortable for them and their working relationship ended on a sour note.
In 1967, she was given a supporting role in a film from Charlie Chaplin titled, "A Countess from Hong Kong" which was a disaster. Some other film roles to follow were on, "Tiger by the Tail" (1968), "Satan's Harvest" (1970), "Mr. Kingstreet's War" (1973) and "Where the Wind Dies" (1976).
She spent over eleven years collecting wild animals for the film, "Roar" (1981) which only grossed 2 million and took 17 million to produce, but the film did open her eyes to a cause she felt very strongly about.
Hedren still works in the industry today with a variety of films in pre and post production and still makes a number of guest appearances on television as well. Some of her later film work was in, "I Woke Up Early the Day I Died" (1998), "Citizen Ruth" (1996) and "I Heart Huckabees" (2004). Her television roles have ranged from drama to comedy. Working on such shows as a soap opera titled, "Fashion House" (2006) and the television movie, "Tribute" (2009).
Hedren has been married four times. She first married Peter Griffith from 1952 through 1961 and they had one child, who grew up to be a famous actress, Melanie Griffith. Her second marriage was to Noel Marshall from September 27th, 1964 through 1982 and again she had one child. Her third marriage lasted ten years from 1985 to 1995 to Luis Barrenecha. Hedren's fourth time to marry was to Martin Dinnes from June 6th 2002 till present.
Hedren is very involved in animal rights. She is a vegetarian and presides over the Roar Foundation which is an animal preserve outside of Los Angeles. She also lobbied for passage of Shambala Wild Animal Act. Hedren is a volunteer International Relief Coordinator for, "Food for the Hungry" and is very involved in humanitarian rights traveling worldwide setting up relief programs for earthquake, hurricane and famine victims.
Hedren was honored as "Woman of Vision" by Women in film and video in Washington D.C and was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. She is currently waiting for some of her latest films to hit the big screen in 2011.
