Tab Hunter ACTOR

Tab Hunter was born on July 11th, 1931 in New York City, New York with the birth name Arthur Andrew Kelm to parents Charles and Gertrude.  He had one older brother and grew up in an abusive household.  Once his parents divorced, his mother relocated to California with him and his older brother.

At the age of fifteen, he dropped out of school and he joined the Coast Guard not being honest with his true age, however when his age was revealed he was discharged from service.  He decided to consentrate on his love of horse riding and got a job at a riding academy which soon lead to his pursuit for a career as an actor even though he had no previous acting experience.

His film debut was in "The Lawless" (1950) and he followed with a number of other roles such as "Island of Desire' (1952), "Battle Cry" (1955), "The Sea Chase" (1955), "The Burning Hill" (1956), "The Girl He Left Behind" (1956) and "Damn Yankees!" (1958) a role he is most known for today.
Hunter wanted to show the world he was actually talented and more then just good looks so he embarked on a singing career.  He actually made the top 40 chart with songs such as, "Young Love" (1957), however his music career did not last so long and therefore he returned back to acting to make a living.

Along with building a decent career as a film actor and now a recording artist he also began appearing on television.  He was given his own series, "The Tab Hunter Show" (1960) which only lasted one season but he did manage over his career to make more than 200 television appearances.
The quality of film roles being offered to him were less then standard, but he took them anyway to stay working in the industry.  Such roles on films like, "Operation Bikini" (1963), "Ride the Wild Surf" (1964), "City in the Sea" (1965) and "Birds Do It" (1966) lead to him begin pursuing other entertainment aspects such as stage acting and touring the dinner circuit, but he also made regular appearances on, "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" (1976).
He made a decent comeback in the 1980's with some of his later film roles in which he starred a total of three times with female impersonator Divine in, "Polyester" (1981), "Out of the Dark" (1989) and "Lust in the Dust" (1985).
Today, Hunter still works in the industry as a film producer in Southern California at the age of seventy and was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording.
