STOCKARD CHANNING BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Stockard Channing was born on February 13th, 1944 in New York City, New York with the birth name Susan Williams Antonia Stockard, born to Lester Napier and Mary Alice Stockard.
Channing was raised in Brooklyn, New York and received her early years education at Chapin School. She was later sent to study at a boarding school, Madeira School in Virginia.
After high school, Channing enrolled at Radcliffe College and studied literature and history, earning her college degree in 1965. After college, she decided to give acting a try and began searching for work as a stage actress. Her first professional stage role was in a production of, "The Investigation" in 1966 followed by a couple more roles with the Theatre Company of Boston.
Channing then began working on Broadway appearing in such productions as, "Adaptation/Next", "Arsenic and Old Lace", "Play Strindberg" and "No Hard Feelings". In addition to gaining experience as a stage actress, she was also given the chance to appear on film in a number of small roles. Some of her early career credits included, "The Hospital" (1971), "Up the Sandbox" (1972), "The Fortune" (1975) and "The Big Bus" (1976).
As her career progressed, more prominent roles began to come her direction appearing in such features as, "Sweet Revenge" (1976) and "Grease" (1978), a role that earned her a people's Choice Award for Favorite Motion Picture Supporting Actress. This films success lead to Channing being offered two television sitcom roles, "Stockard Channing in Just Friends" (1979) and "The Stockard Channing Show" (1980).
Not only had she made quite a name for herself in the film industry and had now added some television work to her resume, Channing never neglected her love of live performing. She continued to work as a stage actress adding more production credits such as, "Vanities", "Absurd Person Singular", "As You Like It", "They're Playing Our Song", "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg", "The House of Blue Leaves", "Six Degrees of Separation", "Four Baboons Adoring the Sun" and "The Lion in Winter" among others.
She received a number of awards for her theatrical work and also was honored for her work as a television actress. For her appearance on, "Echoes in the Darkness" she earned a Emmy nomination and won a Cable ACE Award for her appearance on, "Tidy Endings" in 1988.
Other television credits she has added over her course as an actress include, "Sesame Street", "Trying Times", "Avonlea", "Out of Practice" and "The West Wing" starring alongside Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Alan Alda, John Goodman, John Spencer, Jimmy Smits, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Moira Kelly and Richard Schiff to name a few. She has also done voiceover work for, "King of the Hill", "Batman Beyond" and "The Cleveland Show".
Other more well known film roles include, "Six Degrees of Separation" (1993), for which she earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations as well as, "The Venice Project" (1999), "Isn't She Great?" (2000), "Anything Else" (2003), "Must Love Dogs" (2005), "Sparkle" (2007) and "Multiple Sarcasms" (2010). Most recent work includes appearances on the television movies, "17th Precinct" (20110 and "Family Trap" (2012).
Stockard Channing has married a total of four times. Her first marriage was at the age of twenty to Walter Channing Jr., however, this marriage lasted only four years. She then wed, Paul Schmidt in 1969 and they remained together until 1976. Her third husband was David Debin from 1976 through 1980. In 1982, she married her fourth husband, David Lefferts Rawle, but again by 1988, another marriage came to an end. She has no biological children and is currently in a relationship since 1988 with, Daniel Gillham.
