STAN LAUREL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Stan Laurel was born on June 16th, 1890 in Ulverston, Cumbria in England.  He was born with the birth name Arthur Stanley Jefferson to a family already very much involved in show business.  His father worked as an actor and a theater manager and by the time he was sixteen years old he was making his stage debut at the Pickard's Museum in Glasgow.

Due to following in his fathers footsteps he did not ever get the chance to receive much of a formal education as very early on in life he was exposed to vaudeville and stage performing.  He joined the Fred Karno vaudeville company and was an understudy to Charlie Chaplin.  Later in 1916, Laurel traveled to the United States and did a comedic impersonation of Chaplin which gained him quite a bit of attention and turned out to be successful and a help in boosting his career.

He decided to remain in the United States and test out a career as a film actor.  He began with working on, "Nuts in May" (1917) and continued to work on a variety of shorts, mostly with Hal Roach Studio's.

A number of other big screen appearances followed such as on, "The Lucky Dog" (1921) "45 Minutes from Hollywood" (1926), "Sugar Daddies" (1927), "From Soup to Nuts" (1928), "Pardon Us" (1931), "The Flying Deuces" (1939), "The Bullfighters" (1945) and "Utopia" (1951).

In 1960 Laurel was also honored with a special type of Oscar for, "his creative pioneering in the field of cinema comedy".  He is most well known when his name is said with his counterpart,  Oliver Hardy whom he first met on the filming of, "Lucky Dog" (1921) and the two became known as, Laurel and Hardy.  They were comedic geniuses and worked together in the film industry for twenty years.

He also started his own production company, Stan Laurel Productions and financed a number of low budget musical westerns.

Although he lead a highly successful professional life, his personal life was a little more unstable.  In total, Laurel married five different wives, however only had a total of two children from his first marriage to Lois Neilson whom he married in 1926 and remained with until 1934.  Wife number two was Virginia Ruth Rogers whom he married in 1934 and divorced three years later.  His third marriage was to Vera Ivanova Shuvalova from 1938 through 1940.  Laurel decided to wed again in 1941 to Virginia Ruth Rogers and they were married until 1946.  His fifth time to marry was to Ida Kitaeva in 1946 and they stayed together until Stan Laurel passed away on February 23rd, 1965 in Santa Monica, California after suffering a heart attack.

The comedy team of Laurel and Hardy was celebrated on the Ralph Edward's hit show "This Is Your Life" in the mid 1950's.

Stan Laurel is interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood, California and was voted by Entertainment Weekly along with his comedic partner, Oliver Hardy as the 45th Greatest Movie Stars of all time.
