SIG RUMAN BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Sig Ruman was born on October 11th, 1884 in Hamburg, Germany with the birth name Siegfried Albon Rumann. After high school he went on to study electrical engineering but later decided he wanted to pursue a career as an actor.
Prior to making the move to the United States he served in the German Army during World War I and in 1924, he moved to the United States in hopes of finding work as an actor.
Ruman befriended George S. Kaufman, a playwright and was able to find stage work, soon adding a number of Broadway roles to his resume. Along with working as a stage actor, he began adding film work to his credits with some of his early career roles being on, "Lucky Boy" (1928) starring George Jessel, Gwen Lee, Richard Tucker and Gayne Whitman, John Ford's "The World Moves On" (1934) starring Madeleine Carroll, Franchot Tone, Louise Dresser, Reginald Denny, Dudley Digges, Lumsden Hare, Russell Simpson and Stepin Fetchit and "A Night at the Opera" (1935) starring alongside Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx, Kitty Carlisle, Allan Jones, Margaret Dumont and Walter Woolf King.
Over the course of his career, he would add over 100 film and television roles to his resume. Some of his more well known films being, "A Day at the Races" (1937) starring the three Marx Brothers, Groucho, Chico and Harpo with Margaret Dumont, Allan Jones, Dudley Dickerson, Robert Middlemass, Douglass Dumbrille and Maureen O'Sullivan, "Girls on Probation" (1938) starring with Jane Bryan, Ronald Reagan, Sheila Bromley, Elisabeth Risdon, Henry O'Neill, Dorothy Peterson and Susan Hayward, "Confessions of a Nazi Spy" (1939) starring Edward G. Robinson, Francis Lederer, George Sanders, Henry O'Neill, Dorothy Tree, Ward Bond, Joe Sawyer and Paul Lukas, "To Be or Not To Be" (1942) co-starring Carole Lombard, Jack Benny, Robert Stack, Felix Bressart, Lionel Atwill and Stanley Ridges, "The Hitler Gang" (1944) narrated by Albert Dekker and starring Bobby Watson as Adolph Hitler, Roman Bohnen, Victor Varconi, Martin Kosleck and Luis Van Rooten, "A Night in Casablanca" (1946) starring the Marx Brothers, Groucho Marx, Chico Marx, Harpo Marx along with Charles Drake, Paul Harvey, Dan Seymour, Lois Collier and Lewis Russell, "Stalag 17" (1953) starring William Holden, Don Taylor, Robert Strauss, Neville Brand, Harvey Lembeck, Don Taylor, Otto Preminger, Richard Erdman, Gil Stratton and Peter Graves and "The Glenn Miller Story" (1954) starring James Stewart, June Allyson, Harry Morgan, George Tobias, Barton MacLane, Nino Tempo, Charles Drake and Marion Ross and another John Ford Classic film "The Wings of Eagles" (1957) starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Dan Dailey, Ward Bond, Ken Curtis, Edmund Lowe, Kenneth Tobey, Willis Bouchey, Barry Kelley, Dorothy Jordan and Tige Andrews.
Along with his many film roles, he also appeared on a variety of television series such as, "The Addams Family", "Where's Raymond?", "The Halls of Ivy", "Private Secretary", "Lawman", "The Tab Hunter Show", "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis", "Hank", "One Step Beyond", "Daniel Boone" and "Petticoat Junction".
Sig Ruman passed away from a heart attack on February 14th, 1967 in Julian, California. His remains were interred at a Julian Cemetery in San Diego, California.
