SHUG FISHER BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Shug Fisher was born on September 26th, 1907 in Grady County, Oklahoma with the birth name George Clinton Fisher. His nickname, 'Shug' came from his mother as a child, short for sugar.
From a young age he learned how to play a number of instruments such as the mandolin, fiddle and guitar. As he grew older he decided to take his musical act on the road and added to it a comedic act.
Fisher then decided to relocate to Hollywood and see if he could make a name for himself in the entertainment industry. While looking for work as an actor he supported himself working as a oil field cabler and tool dresser.
Soon he was given a chance to perform on the radio and also performed live with a number of different country groups. In 1939 he appeared on WLW0AM's Boone County Jamboree. He then began working on western films with Roy Rogers.
He was singing in films, performing live and also writing songs such as, "Out on the Open Range" and "Ridin' Down to Santa Fe". After doing some work with Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers in 1943 more doors began to open for him in the acting world.
Shug Fisher appeared in some classic wester movies during his career such as "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (1962) starring John Wayne, James Stewart, Lee Marvin, Edmond O'Brien, Vera Miles, Andy Devine and Woody Strode and "Cheyenne Autumn" (1964) starring James Stewart, Richard Widmark, Ricardo Montalban, Carroll Baker, Sal Mineo, Karl Malden, Victor Jory, George O'Brien, Edward G. Robinson and Dolores del Rio.
Shug was cast as a recurring role on the television adventure series, "Ripcord" (1961). Other roles he is more well known for are on the series, "Beverly Hillbillies" (1962) and he continued to appear in a number of westerns as a member of the Sons of the Pioneers in a variety of the Roy Rogers serials.
Other television appearances include, "Gunsmoke", "Ozark Jubilee", "Bonanza", "The Virginian", "Daniel Boone", "The Dukes of Hazzard" and "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color".
Fisher married only once to Peggy Summers in 1935 and when this marriage came to an end he did not re-marry, nor did he have any children of his own. His final acting roles were in the television movie, "The Return of the Beverly Hillbillies" (1981) and the television series, "Harper Valley" (1982).
Shug Fisher passed away on March 16th, 1984 in Woodland Hills, California and his remains are buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery.
