SHIRLEY JONES BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Shirley Jones was born on March 31st, 1934 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania with the birth name Shirley Mae Jones to parents Marjorie Williams and Paul Jones. She was an only child and at the age of six she was already singing and by the age of twelve her parents enrolled her in singing lessons. When she graduated from South Hutingdon High School she moved to New York and auditioned for the casting director for Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Right away she was given the part of the nurse in the Broadway production, "South Pacific". After a couple more stage roles, Jones relocated to Hollywood and vegan appearing in films.
Some of her early film roles were on, "Oklahoma!" (1955) in her film debut and starring with Gordon MacRae, Rod Steiger, Charlotte Greenwood, Gloria Grahame, Gene Nelson, James Whitmore and Eddie Albert, "Carousel" (1956) also starring Gordon MacRae, Cameron Mitchell, Gene Lockhart and John Dehner to name a few, "Elmer Gantry" (1960) starring alongside Burt Lancaster, Jean Simmons, Arthur Kennedy, Dean Jagger, Patti Page, John McIntire, Edward Andrews and Hugh Marlowe, for which she won an Oscar, "Two Rode Together" (1961) starring James Stewart, Richard Widmark, John McIntire, Linda Cristal, Andy Devine, Henry Brandon, Woody Strode, Ford Rainey, Ken Curtis, John Qualen, Willis Bouchey, Jeanette Nolan and Harry Carey Jr. , "The Music Man" (1962) also starring Robert Preston, Buddy Hackett, Paul Ford, Hermione Gingold and Ron Howard and The Cheyenne Social Club" (1970) starring with James Stewart, Henry Fonda, Sue Ane Langdon, Jackie Joseph, Elaine Devry and Robert Middleton.
As the musical film era was already beginning to fade, Jones was also making television appearances on such series as, "Playhouse 90" (1956), "The Partridge Family" (1970) and television movies such as, "The Lives of Jenny Dolan" (1975).
As her career progressed she began also working on fitness videos. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Shirley Jones married twice first to, Jack Cassidy in 1956 and they had three children together before the marriage ended in divorce in 1975. She became the step mother of David Cassidy who ended up playing her oldest son on, "The Partridge Family". Her marriage ended due to her husbands mental illness and manic depression. He actually perished in a fire in his apartment. She married for a second time to Marty Ingels in 1977 a comedian. Her latest appearance was on, "The Drew Carey Show" (1995). She remains married to Marty and has nine grandchildren.
