ROSCOE LEE BROWNE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Roscoe Lee Browne was born on May 2nd, 1925 in Woodbury, New Jersey. After high school he earned his college degree from Lincoln University and then proceeded to earn a graduate degree from Middlebury College. During high school and college he excelled as a track star and later competed internationally.
He began his career as a French and literature teacher at Lincoln University and also worked for a time as a sales rep for a wine and liquor company. With no formal acting training, he one day for no apparent reason decided to try and embark on a career as an actor.
He auditioned for the New York Shakespeare Festival for a role in the play, "Julius Caesar" and got the part of Soothsayer. Thereafter, he appeared in such productions as, Taming of the Shrew", "Titus Andronicus", "Othello", "King Lear" and "Troilus and Cressida".
Soon he began adding a number of more successful stage credits to his resume such as, "The Blacks", "The Dream on Monkey Mountain" and "Joe Turner's Come and Gone". He also appeared in such Broadway plays as, "A Cool World", "General Seegar", "Tiger, Tiger Burning Bright" and "Danton's Death".
In addition to working as a stage actor he also gained experience on the other side of the industry writing and directing the play, "A Hand Is on the Gate: An Evening of Negro Poetry and Folk Music".
By the mid 1960's, Roscoe also began appearing in such films as, "The Connection" (1962), "The Comedians" (1967) co-starring Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Alec Guinness, Paul Ford, Lillian Gish, Raymond St. Jacques, Cicely Tyson, James Earl Jones and Georg Stanford Brown, "Up Tight!" (1968) with Raymond St. Jacques and Ruby Dee, Alfred Hitchcock's "Topaz" (1969) starring Frederick Stafford, Dany Robin, Claude Jade, Michel Subor, Karin Dor, John Vernon, Michel Piccoli, Philippe Noiret, John Forsythe and Per-Axel Arosenius, "The Liberation of L.B. Tight!" (1968), "The Cowboys" (1972) starring John Wayne, A Martinez, Slim Pickens, Bruce Dern, Robert Carradine and Colleen Dewhurst, "Super Fly T.N.T." (1972) with Robert Guillaume and Ron O'Neal, "Uptown Saturday Night" (1974) starring alongside Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor, Rosalind Cash, Calvin Lockhart and Harry Belafonte, "Logan's Run" (1976) starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Farrah Fawcett, Michael Anderson Jr. and Peter Ustinov, "Legal Eagles" (1986) starring Robert Redford, Debra Winger, Daryl Hannah, Brian Dennehy, Christine Baranski, Terence Stamp and Steven Hill, "The Mambo Kings" (1992) starring Armand Assante, Antonio Banderas, Cathy Moriarty, Maruschka Detmers, Talisa Soto and Desi Arnaz Jr, and "Dear God" (1996) starring Greg Kinnear, Laurie Metcalf, Tim Conway, Maria Pitillo and Hector Elizondo.
He continued to alternate between stage and film work, returning to Broadway a couple more times later in his career appearing in the productions, "My One and Only" and "Two Trains Running".
Along with film and stage work, Roscoe graced the television screen with roles on such series as, "All in the Family", "Bonanza", "Sanford and Son", "Mannix", "Good Times", "A Different World", "Law & Order", "Will & Grace" and "The Cosby Show", a role for which he won an Emmy Award.
Roscoe Lee Browne never married nor had any children of his own. Some of his last appearances were on the television series, "Side Order of Life" (2007) and doing voice over work for, "Epic Movie" in 2007. He passed away from stomach cancer on April 11th, 2007 in Los Angeles, California at the age of eighty one.
