ROBERT REDFORD BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Robert Redford was born with the birth name Charles Robert Redford Jr. on August 18th, 1936 in Santa Monica California to parents Martha and Charles. He attended high school at Van Nuys High and then went on to earn a degree at the University of Colorado. He also studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York and studied theater set design and acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
He began his career as an actor in New York working on the stage as well as television. Some of his early television work as a guest star were on, "The Untouchables", "Whispering Smith", "Perry Mason", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Route 66", "Dr. Kildare", "Playhouse 90" and "Twilight Zone". In 1962 he earned an Emmy in, "The Voice of Charlie Pont" which aired on ABC.
His stage appearances were in such productions as, "The Tall Story" (1959), "The Highest Tree" (1959), "Sunday in New York" (1961) and "Barefoot in the Park" (1963).
After an already highly successful career as a stage actor and television actor, he went on to work on a number of films. His film debut was in 1962 on the film, "War Hunt" co-starring John Saxon and Charles Aidman, followed by roles in such films as, "Inside Daisy Clover" (1965) also starring Natalie Wood, Christopher Plummer, Ruth Gordon and Roddy McDowall, "This Property in Condemned" (1966) starring with Natalie Wood, Charles Bronson, Kate Reid, Robert Blake, Jon Provost, Mary Badham and Dabney Coleman and "Barefoot in the Park" (1967) co-starring Jane Fonda, Charles Boyer and Mildred Natwick whose role was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. His break through role was in, "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969) co-starring Paul Newman and Katharine Ross with Cloris Leachman, Strother Martin, Ted Cassidy and Sam Elliott in supporting characters, followed by his roles on the films, "Jeremiah Johnson" (1972) also starring Will Geer, Stefan Gierasch and Joaquin Martinez and "The Candidate" (1972) starring with Peter Boyle, Natalie Wood, Kenneth Tobey, Don Porter and Melvyn Douglas, that really boosted his popularity. He even earned an Oscar nomination for his role in the film, "The Sting" (1973) starring alongside his friend Paul Newman and also featured Robert Shaw, Charles Durning, Ray Walston, Harold Gould, Eileen Brennan and Dana Elcar.
Some other films that were quite successful and made him a box office hit were, "The Great Waldo Pepper" (1975) starring with Bo Svenson, Margot Kidder, Susan Sarandon, Geoffrey Lewis and Edward Hermann, "All the Presidents Men" (1976) starring alongside Dustin Hoffman, Martin Balsam, Jason Robards, Hal Holbrook, Jack Warden, Jane Alexander, Ned Beatty and Meredith Baxter and "Out of Africa" (1985) also starring Meryl Streep, where he was cast in the lead role and the film won an Oscar for Best Picture.
Redford also became very much involved in the film industry as a producer and director but did not desert his acting completely. He had starring roles in, "Up Close and Personal" (1996) also starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Stockard Channing, Joe Mantegna and Kate Nelligan, "The Horse Whisperer" (1998) starring with Kristin Scott Thomas, Jeanette Nolan, Chris Cooper, Kate Bosworth, Scarlett Johansson, Sam Neill, Cherry Jones and Dianne Wiest and in 2005 he returned to the big screen with a role in the film, "An Unfinished Life" (2005) co-starring Jennifer Lopez and Morgan Freeman and soon to be released as producer and director "The Company You Keep" (2012) starring Shia LaBeouf, Susan Sarandon, Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Terrence Howard and Nick Nolte just to name a few.
Robert Redford married Lola Van Wagenen in 1958 and together they had four children, David, Shauna, Amy and Scott. They lost their first child, Scott at only two and a half months to "SIDS" sudden infant death syndrome. In 1985 he and Lola divorced and Redford married his long time girlfriend in 2009, Sibylle Szaggars and they live together at his Sundance Utah home.
He has been honored with a number of awards throughout his career such as in 1997, Empire (UK) Magazine voted him, "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" and in 1995 they also awarded him as one of the 100 sexiest Stars in film History. In 1996 he was also awarded the American National Medal of the Arts by the National Endowment of the Arts in Washington D.C.
