ROBERT NEWTON BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Robert Newton was born on June 1st, 1905 in Shaftesbury, England, born to Algernon Newton. He began acting at the age of sixteen first working as a stage actor at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and later found work in London in such productions as, "Bitter Sweet" and "Private Lives" on Broadway. Other stage credits he added to his resume were in, "Hamlet", "No orchids for Miss Blandish" and "Gaslight".
He became known as one of the most well known character actors from Britain being voted in 1950 as the 5th most popular British movie star. He is most remembered for his role portraying, Long John Silver in the film, "Treasure Island" (1950). Other film credits he added to his resume included, "Major Barbara" (1941), "Oliver Twist" (1948), "Obsession" (1949), "The Beachcomber" (1954) and "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956).
Along with his film career he was given a chance to portray the character, Long john Silver again in the hit television series, "The Adventures of Long John Silver" (1955) appearing in a total of twenty six episodes.
Sadly, he was an alcoholic which took a huge toll on his career in later years. He found it hard to find work and after appearing on such television series as, "Climax!", "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" and "Lux Video Theatre" his life came to an end way before his time.
Robert Newton passed away on March 25th, 1956 in Beverly Hills, California after suffering from a heart attack at the age of fifty. His remains were interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California and later his son scattered his ashes in the sea in Mount's Bay.
He married four times throughout his lifetime, first to Petronella Walton in 1929 and they had one child together before their marriage came to an end. He then married Ann Isobel Noel McLean in 1936, however by 1945 this marriage also ended. He third wife was Natalie Hazel Cochrane Newhouse in 1947 and they also had one child together before divorcing in 1952. His fourth and final wife was Vera Budnik and together they had another child and remained married until he passed away.
