ROBERT DE NIRO BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Robert De Niro was born on August 17th in New York City, New York with the birth name Robert Anthony De Niro Jr. to parents, Virginia Holton Admiral and Robert De Niro Sr. who both worked as artists. At the age of three, his parents divorced and he was raised by his mother in Manhattan and Greenwich Village, but his father lived nearby so he saw his dad often as well. He studied at Elisabeth Irwin High School followed by enrolling at the High School of Music and Art. He then went on to study at a private school called, McBurney School and then Rhodes Preparatory School, although he never graduated. He later went on to study at the Stella Adler Conservatory and also the American Workshop.
Throughout his career as an actor he has earned a number of nicknames such as and Bobby Milk, Kid Monroe. He first began his involvement in the entertainment industry, by appearing in his first movie role at the age of twenty in, "The Wedding Party" (1963) also featuring Jill Clayburgh, Jennifer Salt, William Finley and Jared Martin.
Early on in his career other film roles followed such as, "Bloody Mama" (1970) starring Shelley Winters, Bruce Dern, Pat Hingle, Don Stroud and Alex Nicol, and then his first well known role was in the film, "Bang the Drum Slowly" (1973) co-starring Michael Moriarty, followed by roles in the films, "Mean Streets" (1973) starring with Harvey Keitel, Cesare Danova and David Carradine, "The Godfather: Part II" (1974) starring alongside Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Marianna Hill and Morgana King, for which he earned an Academy Award for Best Actor and "Taxi Driver" (1976) co-starring Jodie Foster, Cybill Sheperd and Harvey Keitel, earning another Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
As his career progressed, De Niro was seen on the big screen in such films as, "Taxi Driver" (1976) starring wth Jodie Foster, Harvey Keitel and Cybill Shepherd, "New York, New York" (1977) with Liza Minnelli, "The Deer Hunter" (1978) co-sarring Christopher Walken and Meryl Streep, "Raging Bull" (1980) starring alongside Joe Pesci, Cathy Moriarty and Theresa Saldana, for which he again won another Academy Award for Best Actor and then appeared in, "Midnight Run" (1988) co-starring Charles Grodin, Yaphet Kotto, John Ashton, Dennis Farina, Joe Pantoliano and Philip Baker Hall, "Cape Fear" (1991) also starring Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis and features cameos from Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Martin Balsam, who all appeared in the original 1962 film and "Casino" (1995) starring with Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone and James Woods.
In 1993, De Niro also starred in "This Boy's Life", featuring then-rising child actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire along with Chris Cooper and Ellen Barkin.
To avoid being type cast in mostly 'mom' character roles, he took on other comedy roles such as, "Meet the Fockers" (2004) co-starring Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Blythe Danner and Teri Polo, then "Sleepers" (1996) starring alongside Kevin Bacon, Brad Pitt, Dustin Hoffman and Minnie Driver, "Wag the Dog" (1997) co-starring Anne Heche, Denis Leary, Willie Nelson, Kirsten Dunst, Woody Harrelson, Craig T. Nelson and William H. Macy and "CopLand" (1997) featuring an ensemble cast including Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Michael Rapaport, Robert Patrick, Peter Berg, Arthur Nascarella and John Spencer.
In 2000 De Niro starred in a compelling military drama "Men of Honor" sharing the spotlight with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Hal Holbrook, Charlize Theron and Powers Boothe, which was inspired by the true story of Master Chief Petty Officer Carl Brashear, the first African American Master Diver in the United States Navy.
Along with his highly successful acting career, he also has his own production company called, Tribeca Film Center. His first film he directed was, "A Bronx Tale" (1993) followed by directing such films as, "The Good Shephard" (2006) starring Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie, William Hurt, Alec Baldwin, Timothy Hutton, Joe Pesci, Gabriel Macht, Keir Dullea, Billy Crudup, Michael Gambon and John Turturro and soon the sequel of "The Good Shephard" which the title is still unreleased.
De Niro also did some voice over work for the animated film, "Shark Tale" (2004). Some of his latest appearances have been on the big screen in such films as, "Machete" (2010) also starring Jessica Alba, Don Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Steven Seagal and Lindsay Lohan, "New Years Eve" (2011) starring alongside Halle Berry, Jessica Biel, Jon Bon Jovi, Abigail Breslin, Josh Duhamel, Hector Elizondo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Ashton Kutcher, Katherine Heigl, Ryan Seacrest, Jim Belushi and Alyssa Milano and soon to release, "Red Lights" (2012) co-starring Sigourney Weaver, Cillian Murphy, Toby Jones, Elizabeth Olsen and Leonardo Sbaraglia, "The Silver Linings Playbook" (2012) staring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Anupam Kher, Julia Stiles, Jacki Weaver and Chris Tucker, "Killing Season" (2012) co-starring John Travolta and "The Comedian" (2012) starring Will Ferrell.
De Niro has married twice throughout his lifetime. His first wife was Diahnne Abbott whom he married in 1976 and they had one son together, Raphael, before the marriage ended in 1988. He then married Grace Hightower in 1997 and they also have one son together, Elliot and remain married today. He also has twin sons, Julian Henry and Aaron Kendrik from a surrogate mother in 1995 when he was involved with model, Toukie Smith who he never married.
Along with his success as an actor and production company owner he has also been involved in a number of other ventures such as cofounding the Tribeca Film Festival, and two restaurants, Nobu and TriBeCa Grill.
He has also donated scripts, costumes and props to the Harry Ransom Center located at the University of Texas in Austin. Currently, De Niro owns property in New York. In 2003, he came public with the news that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, however he has been able to make a full recovery.
