ROBERT ARMSTRONG BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Robert Armstrong was born on November 20th, 1890 in Saginaw, Michigan with the birth name Robert William Armstrong. He was raised in Seattle and after high School, Armstrong enrolled at the University of Washington with the intent to study law. However, with the influence of his uncle, Paul Armstrong who was a playwright and producer, he persuaded Armstrong to pursue a career as an actor instead.
He began by working as a stage actor and joined a touring company called, Gleason's company where soon he was being cast in leading roles such as in the stage production of, "Is Zat So?" (1925-1926).
It did not take long for him to grab the attention of a number of Hollywood scouts and soon he was appearing in a number of films such as, "Square Crooks" (1928), "Show Folks" (1928), "Oh, Yeah!" (1929) and "Be Yourself!" (1930).
RKO then took him on in a number of horror adventure films such as, "The Most Dangerous Game" (1932), "King Kong" (1933), "The Son of Kong" (1933), "Blind Adventure" (1933), "Palooka" (1934), "G' Men" (1935), "Man of Conquest" (1939), "My Favorite Spy" (1942), "Blood on the Sun" (1945) and "Mighty Joe Young" (1949). Throughout his career he would appear in over 160 films.
Along with the huge number of films he added to his resume he also made several television appearances on such series as, "Studio 57", "Crossroads", "State Trooper", "Wagon Train", "M Squad", "Rawhide", "Lassie" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".
His professional life was always busy and so was his personal life. He married a total of four times throughout his lifetime. His first wife was Peggy Allenby from 1921 through 1925. He then married Ethel V. Jones in 1926 and they were together until 1931. His third time to marry was to Gladys Dubois in 1936 and this marriage only lasted through 1939. He chose to wed for a fourth time to Claire Louise Frisbe in 1940 and they remained married until he passed away on April 20th, 1973 in Santa Monica, California after suffering from cancer.
