Richard Harris was born on October 1st, 1930 in Limerick, Ireland with the birth name Richard St. John Harris to a farming family who had nine children total.  He was a very good athlete and excelled at rugby as well as had a knack for literature.  He soon developed an interest in the theater and after completing high school, he went on to study theater at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.  Following his education he went on to work on a number of stage productions in London.

He made a couple of television appearances on "The Dupont Show of the Month" (1958) and "TV Television Playhouse" (1958).  Soon he was getting roles in such films as, "The Wreck of the Mary Deare" (1959), "The Night Fighters" (1960), "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), "The Sporting Life" (1963) for which he earned an Oscar nomination and "Alive and Kicking" (1964).

Film roles were coming quite easy to him with appearances on, "The Heroes of Telemark" (1965), "Major Dundee" (1965), "Hawaii" (1966) and "Camelot" (1967).  Even as his career progressed into the 1970's, he continued to get cast on successful films such as, "The Hero" (1971), "The Deadly Trackers" (1973), "Robin and Marian" (1976) and "The Wild Geese" (1978).

In 1990 he earned another Oscar nomination for his role on the film, "The Field" and his career continued to blossom well into the 90's gaining praise yet again for his best role as a gunfighter in Clint Eastwood's film, "Unforgiven" (1992).  In 2001 he starred in, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" gaining him a whole new generation of film fans.  In 2002 he did a his final film role on a television movie called, "Caesar" playing the character, Lucius Sulla.

Harris spent the last twelve years of his life living at the Savoy Hotel in London.  Richard Harris married twice throughout his lifetime, first to Elizabeth Rees in 1957 and they had three children before divorcing in 1969.  His second marriage was to Ann Turkel in 1974, however they divorced in 1982 and never had any children together.  Harris lost his life to Hodgkin's disease on October 25th, 2002 in Bloomsbury, London.  His remains were cremated and his ashes were scattered at his home in the Bahamas.
