REGINALD DENNY BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Reginald Denny was born on November 20th, 1891 in Richmond, Surrey England located in the United Kingdom with the birth name Reginald Leigh Dugmore. He was born into a family already involved in show business. His father was a stage actor and singer by the name of W.H. Denny who was a member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company.
Denny left High School at the age of sixteen and went on to study at St. Francis Xavier College in Mayfield, Sussez. He was quite intelligent and passed the Oxford exams, but at that point in his life he began to develop an interest in acting. In 1911, he traveled to America working as part of the, "Quaker Girl" cast, but only remained for one year.
In 1912, Denny decided to join an acting troupe and he traveled throughout the United States, India and as far as the far east. He also had the opportunity to debut in a couple of British films and toured briefly with the Bandmann Opera Company. After a while, he decided to return back to the United States and see if he had a chance of making a film career.
In 1917, Denny joined the Royal Flying Corp as a pilot just as World War I progressed. He remained as a pilot for two years and also pursued a career as a boxer. Finally in 1919 he decided he was ready to try this Hollywood film acting.
He was cast in over 60 films during the silent era in was able to even use his boxing and flying skills for some film work such as in the film, "The Leather Pushers" (1922) where he was able to show off his boxing ability. He was also cast in, "The Abysmal Brute" (1923) which became a hit.
When the films industry switched to 'sound films' the public began to realize that Denny was in fact British. It was sometimes a challenge for him to get out of portraying the typical stereotypical roles of a British character, but he was a talented actor with handsome and charming features and he did manage to get cast in a number of films such as, his first talkie, "One Hysterical Night" (1929) followed by "The Lost Patrol" (1934), "Of Human Bondage" (1934) and "Romeo and Juliet" (1936).
As time progressed, in the early forties, Denny was not so concerned with the fact that acting roles were becoming less available to him as he began to pursue an interest elsewhere. He developed an interest in model airplanes and began to pursue a career in making model airplanes. He did not completely neglect his acting career, but he had a intrigued interest in aviation technology and wanted to see where he could take his career in that direction.
Along with his associates, Walter Righter and Paul Whittier, the three men developed "Radioplane" and 15,000 target drones for the United States Army. This company was later purchased in 1952 by Northrup. He also opened up a Model shop and took his passion on the road judging model competitions.
Reginald Denny did make a couple appearances on television and continued to run his company and pursue his model shop. His brother, Malcolm Denny also became an actor and remained in the industry. Denny's final film appearances were in, "Cat Ballou" (1965), "Assault on a Queen" (1966) and "Batman" (1966).
Denny married twice throughout his lifetime, first to Irene Haisman from 1913 through 1927 and they had one daughter together, Barbara. His second marriage was to Betsy Lee from 1928 and they had another three children together. It is unknown what exact year the couple separated.
On June 16th, 1967, Reginald Denny passed away from cancer and was interred at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, California. Reginald Denny will always be known for his light and charming comedy which was very subtle and unique in its own way.
