RAY WALSTON BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Ray Walston was born on December 2nd, 1914 in New Orleans, Louisiana with the birth name Herman Walston.  His father was Harry Norman who worked as a lumber man and his mother was Mittie Kimball.  His first job working in the industry was as a spear carrier for a stock company.  His family soon relocated to Houston and his father had the intention of teaching his son all about the oil business, however, Walston had different career goals in mind and chose to join a traveling repertory company.

After this job ended he met, Margo Jones at the Houston Civic Theater and worked with her for six years, three of those years they worked with the Cleveland Playhouse.  His first big break was when he was cast as a news reporter in the Broadway production, "The Front Page" followed by stage appearances in, "Summer and Smoke", "King Richard III", "Wish You Were Here" and "House of Flowers".

In 1945 he moved to New York and worked on Broadway appearing in the play, "The Alchemist" which brought him attention from New York critics.  He then appeared in "Damn Yankees" in which he won a Tony Award for his performance.  He then proceeded to win two Emmys for his appearance in television in, "Picket Fences" (1992) and also played, 'Uncle Martin' on the television show, "My Favorite Martian" (1963) also starring Bill Bixby.  He also guest starred on such shows as, "The Outlaws" and is remembered for playing the groundskeeper, "Boothby" in, "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

He also appeared in a number of films throughout his career such as, "Kiss Them For Me" (1957), "The Apartment" (1960), "Portrait in Black" (1960), "Paint Your Wagon" (1969), "The Sting" (1973) starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, "Popeye" (1980) and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982).  His final screen appearance was on October 15th, 2000 in the season premier of, "Touched by an Angel".

Between 1980 and 1982 he starred in a total of fourteen films such as, "Galaxy of Terror" (1981).  He was also seen in the opening credits of Steven Spielberg's series, "Amazing Stories" in 1985.  His career never slowed down for a minute.  If well into the 90's he was still seen on the big screen such as in the film, "Of Mice and Men" (1992) and again in Stephen King's, "The Stand" (1994).

He was nominated a total of three times for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his role in, "Picket Fences" and won two of the awards in 1995 and 1996.  In 1998 he appeared once again in the film, "Addams Family Reunion" which went straight to video and never made the big screen.  In 1999, yet again with no slowing down he was in the movie remake of his hit series, "My Favorite Martian".  His final movie role was in an Independent film called, "Early Bird Special" (2001) and he was last seen on the television series, "7th Heaven" (1998-2001).

Ray married one time to Ruth Calvert on November 3rd, 1943 and they had one daughter, Katherine Ann.  They remained married until he passed away on January 1st, 2001 in Beverly Hills, California from lupus at the age of eighty six.  He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and he was cremated and his ashes were given to his daughter.
