PAULETTE GODDARD BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Paulette Goddard was born on June 3rd, 1910 in Whitestone Landing in Long Island, New York with the birth name Pauline Marion Goddard Levy as an only child. She was involved in the entertainment industry from a young age working as a child model and who then debuted in, "The Ziegfeld Follies" at the young age of thirteen. By the age of sixteen she was married but soon divorced and decided to move to Hollywood.
She began working on films being cast in a number of small roles. such as in the film, "Berth Marks" (1929), "The Girl Habit" (1931) and "The Mouthpiece" (1932). Paulette had a natural exquisite beauty and could mesmerize any man with her appearance. She was cast in the film, "The Kid From Spain" (1932) and soon met Charlie Chaplin who cast her in, "Modern Times" (1936). She became an item with Chaplin, but that actually began to hurt her film career. The couple married in 1936 secretly but divorced just four years later.
In 1939 she received a role in the film, "The Women" which earned her a contract with Paramount followed by a role with Bob Hope in, "The Cat and the Canary" (1939). As her career entered the 1940's, it was the busiest time for her with roles on such films as, "The Great Dictator" (1940), "Reap the Wild Wind" (1942), "The Diary of a Chambermaid" (1946) and "Proudly We Hail!" (1943) in which she received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actress.
However, in the late 40's roles were becoming less available to Goddard and she was dropped from her Paramount contract. After a role in her last feature, "Charge of the Lancers" (1954), she decided to leave the film industry and move to Europe returning to the screen only once in the television movie, "The Snoop Sisters" (1972).
Paulette Goddard married four times during her lifetime, first to Edgar James from 1927 through 1932. Her second marriage was to Charles Chaplin from 1936 through 1942. She then married Burgess Meredith from 1944 through 1949. After retiring from acting she married Erick Maria Remarque in 1958 and remained living in Europe with him until he passed away.
Paulette Goddard passed away from heart failure at the age of seventy nine in Ronco, Switzerland on April 23rd, 1990. She left over twenty million dollars to the New York University. She never had any children, but was for a time the step mom to Charlie Chaplin's children and she did suffer one miscarriage when she was pregnant with Burgess's child. Goddard is buried in Ronco Cemetery.
