When he was still a senior in high school he got his first real acting job and then chose to move back to Portland, Oregon on a two year scholarship to study at the University of Portland. He later excelled in his studies at Stanford and Los Angeles City College. Prior to earning his bachelors degree he left college just six credits short to pursue acting fulltime.
He began working as a stage actor performing in the play, "The Dutchman and the Toilet" followed by a role in, "The Latent Heterosexual". He continued working as a stage actor with the Stanford Repertory Theatre and the Inner Cultural Center Theatre in Los Angeles.

In 1994 he won an Emmy Award for his role on the television series, "Picket Fences" and followed this by more films, "Catfish in Black Bean Sauce" (1999) and "Relax…It's Just Sex" (1998). He also had a recurring role on, "Touched By an Angel" (1995-2003).
He never neglected his love of the stage and towards the later part of his career he added such stage credits as, "Richard III", "Othello", "The Merry Wives of Windsor", "The Seagull", "A Few Good Men" and "Checkmates".
Paul Winfield was a homosexual and lived with his partner, Charles Gillan Jr. for thirty years.
