Paul Winchell ACTOR




PAUL WINCHELL BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:  

Paul Winchell was born on December 21st, 1922 in New York City, New York with the birth name Paul Wilchinsky to parents, Sol and Clara Wilchinsky.  He began his career in entertainment as a ventriloquist with his dummy who was called, Jerry Mahoney.  His first well known work was on "Original Amateur Hour" (1948) and he followed this with his radio program.    

Soon he was working on television on the CBS program "The Bigelow Show" (1948) and "The Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney Show" (1950) and his best remembered show "Winchell-Mahoney Time" (1965). 
 
He continued to work in the industry, sometimes appearing without his dummy in some dramatic television roles.  He is also well known for his voice over work such as playing the character "Tigger" for the Walt Disney Company, "Winnie the Pooh" motion pictures series up until 1999.  He also had another dummy by the name of "Knucklehead Smith" and both of his dummies are now displayed in the Smithsonian Institution.
 
Along with being a famous actor, many people do not know that Winchell was also one of the inventors of an artificial heart.  He also held over 30 patents on such devices as, a flameless cigarette lighter, an invisible garter belt, a method of breeding Tilapia fish and an indicator to show when frozen food had gone bad after a power outage. 
 
Throughout his lifetime he married a total of three times, first to Dorothy Movitz and they had two children before ending the marriage.  His second wife was Nina Russel from 1961 through 1972 and they also had one child together.  His final marriage was in 1974 to Jean Freeman whom he had another two children with and remained married to her until he passed away on June 24th, 2005 in Los Angeles, California from natural causes.
 
He was honored throughout his career in a number of ways such as being named television's most versatile performer by Look magazine in 1952 and 1953.  He also earned a Grammy Award in 1974 for Best Children's Recording with "The Most Wonderful Things About Tiggers" from the feature "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too" (1974). He was also nominated for an Annie award for the animated feature Pooh's Grand Adventure: The Search for Christopher Robin (1997).
