PAUL HENREID BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Paul Henreid was born on January 10th, 1908 in Trieste, Austria-Hungary which is now considered a part of Italy. He was born with the birth name, Paul Georg Julius Hernreid Ritter von Wassel-Waldingau. His father was Baron Carl Alphons an investment banker and his mother was Marie Luise von Henreid. He was raised in Vienna and graduated in 1927 from Maria Theresa Academy.
Henreid then went on to graduate from the Institute of Graphic Arts and found a job working as a translator and a book designer. In his off hours at night he was studying acting. He was introduced to a famous director, Max Reinhardt through his employer, Otto Preminger and was signed to an acting contract.
He began his career working as a stage actor at the Reinhardt Theatre in a production of "Faust" (1933) which followed with a couple other stage productions and even work on an a number of Austrian films. Soon he relocated to live in London and work the stage arena there in such productions as "Victoria the Great" (1935).
As his career progressed he moved on to do more film work in such features as "Goodbye" (1939), "Madman of Europe" and "Night Train" (both 1940). Making his way to the United States, he established citizenship within his first year and began working on Broadway productions such as, "Flight to the West" and soon was even working on radio.
In 1941, RKO Pictures offered him a film contract and he worked on such films as "Joan of Paris" (1942), "Casablanca" (1942) starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet, for which he is most remembered for "In Our Time" (1944), "The Spanish Main" (1945), "Rope of Sand" (1949) and "The Thief of Damascus" (1952).
As film roles began to become less available to him he decided to pursue another aspect of the entertainment industry working as a film and television director. He directed such series as "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (1964), "Dead Ringers" (1964), "Bracken's World" (1969-1970) "Climax!" (1954-1955) and "The Man in the City" (1971) amongst others.
Henreid married only once in 1936 to Elizabeth Camilla Julia Gluck and they had two children together and remained married until he passed away from pneumonia on March 29th, 1992 in Santa Monica, California. He is interred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, California and was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for television and film contributions.
