PATRICK MACNEE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Patrick Macnee was born on February 6th, 1922 in London, United Kingdom with the birth name Daniel Patrick Macnee to Daniel Macnee, a race horse trainer and Dorothea Mary. His father was a gambling addict who left his mother who was a lesbian and had another female lover. He was raised by his mother and had a difficult upbringing as a child.
He graduated from Eton and then began to pursue a career as an actor. He first gained experience as a stage actor before breaking in to the film industry appearing as an extra in, "Pygmalion" (1938).
He took a break from acting to serve in the Royal Navy during World War II. Upon completing his military service he decided to enroll at the Webber Douglas School of Dramatic Art in London and continued working as a stage and film actor.
When he became unsatisfied with the roles he was getting in England he decided to relocate to Canada and appeared in such films as, "Hamlet" (1948), "The Battle of the River Plate" (1956) and "Les Girls" (1957).
Patrick then moved to the United States and tried his luck in Hollywood. He began with appearing on a number of television shows such as, "Kraft Theatre", "Matinee Theater", "CBS Summer Theater" and "Ford Theater". He also worked on a number of films such as, "Pacific 13" (1957), "The Veil" (1958) and "Suspicion" (1958).
He then decided to relocate back to England and worked as the producer of a British television series called, "Winston Churchill: The Valliant Years" (1960), followed by a role that gained him a large fan base on the British television series, "The Avengers" (1960), portraying the character, John Steed. He later revised this character on, "The New Avengers" (1976-1977).
Later, Macnee returned again to the United States and appeared on a variety of television series such as, "Gavilan" (1982), "Empire" (1984), "Thunder in Paradise" (1994), "NightMan" (1997), "Super Force" (1990-1992), "The Love Boat" (1984), "Columbo" (1975), "Murder, She Write" (1985-1992) and "Frasier" (2001).
He has also portrayed Sherlock Holmes three different times. Once on an episode of, "Magnum P.I." in 1984, then again in the television movie, "Sherlock Holmes in New York" (1976) and the television movie, "The Hound of London" (1993).
In addition to working as a stage, television and film actor, he has also appeared on a number of television commercials for such products as Swiss Chalet, a Canadian restaurant chain and has recorded a couple audio books and children books.
Soon he began to suffer so bad from arthritis that he had to retire from acting, however he remained in the industry doing voice over work. Along with his career as an actor he was also an author and wrote two novels, "Dead Duck" and "Deadline" both based upon his television series, "The Avengers".
Patrick Macnee has married three times throughout his lifetime. His first wife was Barbara Douglas whom he wed in 1942 and together they had two children before the marriage came to an end in 1956. He then married Katherine Woodville in 1965 but by 1969 this marriage came to an end. His third wife was Baba Majos de Nagyzsenye whom he married in 1988 and they remained together until she passed away in 2007.
