Once he finished playing professional sports he moved to New York and found work the DeSylva-Brown music publishing company.  In 1930 he moved again, this time to Los Angeles California where he found work as a producer with Fox Films.  When the Great depression hit, he lost his job with Fox and instead turned to acting to support himself.

He took a brief break from acting to serve during World War II in the Marine Corps.  Upon his discharge from the military he returned back to his acting work and continued to add such film roles as, "Angel and the Badman" (1947) starring John Wayne, Gail Russell, Irene Rich, "The Babe Ruth Story" (1948) starring William Bendix, "The Stratton Story" (1949) starring James Stewart, June Allyson, "The Jackie Robinson Story" (1950) starring Jackie Robinson, Ruby Dee, Minor Watson, "The Winning Team" (1952) starring Ronald Reagan, "The Pride of the Yankees" (1952) starring Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Walter Brennan, Dan Duryea and "Latin Lovers" (1953).
Along with his film work, later in life he added a number of television credits to his resume such as, "The Life of Riley", "The Abbott and Costello Show" and "The Public Defender".

Pat Flaherty married twice, first to Dorothy Fiske, and they had one child together.  When this marriage came to an end, he wed Dorothea X.
