NIGEL BRUCE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Nigel Bruce was born on February 4th, 1895 in Ensenada, in Baja California with the birth name William Nigel Ernle Bruce. His father, Sir William W. Bruce worked as an engineer and Bruce was actually educated in England.
When he completed his education he found work as a stock broker and during World War I he served in the British Army. He was actually injured, discharged and for a while, confined to live life in a wheelchair. Luckily, he recovered and in 1919 he chose to pursue a career as an actor.
His first stage appearance was in 1920 at the Comedy Theatre in, "Why Marry?" followed by a role in "Eliza Comes to Stay". Nigel continued to work as a stage actor for about eight years before finally landing a role in films. He relocated to Hollywood, California and began working the Hollywood film scene.
In total, Bruce appeared in seventy eight films such as "Treasure Island" (1934), "The Scarlet Pimpernel" (1934), "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" (1936), "Rebecca" (1940), "Suspicion" (1941), "Lassie Come Home" (1943) and "The Corn is Green" (1945) amongst many others.
His most well known role was in the Sherlock Holmes film series between 1939 and 1946 as the role of Doctor Watson. He appeared in all fourteen films and also over 200 radio programs of, "The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes".
Nigel's final film role was in 1954 in "World for Ransom" and he was married only one time to British actress, Violet Campbell on May 21st, 1921 and they had two children, Jennifer and Pauline. The couple remained married until he passed away on October 8th, 1953 in Santa Monica, California after suffering from a heart attack.
His remains were cremated and his ashes are stored in the vault at the Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles, California.
