MYRNA LOY BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Myrna Loy was born on August 2nd, 1905 in Radersburg, Montana with the birth name Myrna Adele Williams. Her mother was Della Williams, a talented pianist. Many remember her for her role portraying, Nora Charles in six of the, “Thin Man” Movies. At the age of thirteen her father passed away and her family relocated to Los Angeles, California. She received her early years education in Los Angeles, California at the Westlake School for Girls.
She began working as a stage actress at the age of fifteen appearing in local productions where she received a small amount of money to help financially support her family. Soon was seen by Rudolph Valentino wife and was given a role in a number of films, with her first being, “What Price Beauty?” (1925) followed by a role in, “Pretty Ladies” (1925).
As the film era transitioned from silent films to sound, Myrna did so too with ease. She soon landed a contract with Warner Brothers after appearing in the film, “Satan in Sables” (1925) followed by roles in such films as, “The Caveman” (1926) and “Bitter Apples” (1927). Myrna continued to get roles but just minor small parts that really never showed what a talented actress she was. Finally when her contract with Warner Brothers came to an end, MGM agreed to sign her and she began getting decent roles in films that showed her true talent.
Some of her better roles were in such films as, “The Prizefighter and the Lady” (1933) and “The Thin Man” (1934) which became the serials she is most remembered for.
As her career progressed roles were become less available to her and in 1960 she was in the film, “Midnight Lace”, which did not follow with another film role until 1969. Her final film role was in 1981 on a television movie called, "Summer Solstice”.
Myrna married a total of four times throughout her lifetime. Her first husband was Arthur Hornblow Jr. whom she wed in 1936 and divorced in 1942. She then married John Hurtz Jr. from 1942 through 1944. Her third husband was Gene Markey in 1946 and they were together until 1950. Myrna then chose to wed for her fourth and final time to Howland H. Sergeant in 1951 and again this marriage was short lived lasting only until 1960. She never had any children and did not choose to marry again.
Her final public appearance was in 1991 during the ceremony where she received her lifetime achievement award at the 63rd Annual Academy Awards which she did via satellite television.
Myrna then passed away at the age of eighty eight on December 14th, 1993 in New York City, New York after suffering complications during a surgical procedure. Her remains were interred in a cemetery in Helena, Montana.
