MOREY AMSTERDAM BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Morey Amsterdam was born on December 14th, 1908 in Chicago, Illinois with the birth name Moritz Amsterdam, born to Max and Jennie Amsterdam. He was the youngest of three boys. At the age of fourteen he became involved in entertaining when he joined vaudeville. When he turned sixteen he found work at a Chicago Speakeasy with Al Capone but soon realized after a shooting incident, this job location was too dangerous and therefore, relocated to California.
He found work as a writer and a gag man for such stars as Jimmy Durante and Will Rogers. By the early 1930's he was also working in radio on such shows as, "The Al Pearce Show" and was becoming quite popular due to his sense of humor. One of his radio shows, "Stop Me if You've Heard This One" (1948) later became a television show.
Morey soon gained a huge amount of popularity for his role on, "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961) playing a comedy writer by the name of, Buddy Sorrell. Along with entertaining he was also showing his fans how talented he was as a song writer with such hits as, "Rum and Coca-Cola".
Amsterdam also appeared in a variety of other television shows such as, "The Morey Amsterdam Show" (1948-1949), "Broadway Open House" (1950), "The Hollywood Squares" (1965), "The Young and the Restless" (1990) and "Caroline in the City" (1995).
Morey also added to his resume a number of small film roles such as, "Beach Party" (1963), "Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood" (1976) and "Don't Worry, We'll Think of a Title" (1966), which he produced as well as starred in.
He married only once to Kay Amsterdam in 1941 and they had two children and remained together until he passed away on October 27th, 1996 in Los Angeles, California after suffering from a heart attack at the age of eighty seven. His remains are entombed at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
