MIRA SORVINO BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Mira Sorvino was born on September 28th, 1967 in Tenafly, New Jersey with the middle name Katherine. Her mother, Lorraine was a former actress and her father, Paul Sorvino was a working actor, who actually discouraged his daughter from pursuing a career in the industry.
As a young girl she loved to entertain and even performed in some local theater productions at her high school. After Sorvino completed high school at Dwight Englewood in New Jersey, she enrolled at Harvard and majored in Chinese where in 1989 she graduated cum laude. Instead of pursuing a career using her degree, Sorvino had always had an interest in acting and therefore, after college she relocated to New York City to try and see if she could break into the industry.
She began with finding small roles on a number of television series such as, "Guiding Light" (1991) and "Swans Crossing" (1992). Sorvino then made her film debut in, "Amongst Friends" (1993) starring Joseph Lindsey, Patrick McGaw and Steve Parlavecchio, followed by a role that same year in, "New York Cop".
Soon more prominent film roles were being offered to her such as, "Barcelona" (1994) with Taylor Nichols and Chris Eigeman, Robert Redford's "Quiz Show" (1994) starring John Turturro, Rob Morrow, Ralph Fiennes, Paul Scofield, David Paymer, Hank Azaria, Martin Scorsese, Paul Guilfoyle and Christopher McDonald and "Mighty Aphrodite" (1995) starring with Helena Bonham Carter, Woody Allen, Michael Rapaport, Olympia Dukakis, Jack Warden, Peter Weler, Claire Bloom, Danielle Ferland, David Ogden Stiers and F. Murray Abraham, a role that earned Sorvino her first Oscar Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
She had now created quite a name for herself in the industry and added to her resume such credits as the television movie, "Norma Jean & Marilyn" (1996) portraying Marilyn Monroe co-starring Ashley Judd and Josh Charles and and the films, "Mimic" (1997) with F. Murray Abraham, Jeremy Northam, Josh Brolin, Charles S. Dutton and Giancarlo Giannini, "The Replacement Killers" (1998) alongside Chow Yun-fat, Michael Rooker, Kenneth Tsang, Jurgen Prochnow, Til Schweiger and Danny Trejo and "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion" (1997) co-starring Lisa Kudrow, Janeane Garofalo, Camryn Manheim and Alan Cumming.
Some of her more recent roles have been in a number of independent films such as, "Human Trafficking" (2005) opposite Donald Sutherland, Remy Girard and Robert Carlyle, for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role as a Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent. She also made a guest appearance on, "House MD" (2008) and the films, "Attack on Leningrad" (2009) with Gabriel Byrne and Olga Sutulova, "Multiple Sarcasms" (2010) starring with Timothy Hutton, Stockard Channing, Dana Delany, Chris Sarandon and Mario Van Peebles, "Union Square" (2011) with Patti Lupone and Tammy Blanchard and "Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life" (2012).
Mira Sorvino has married only once to Christopher Backus whom she wed in 2004 and together they have three children.
