MILBURN STONE BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:

Milburn Stone was born on July 5th, 1904 in Burrton, Kansas.  As a teenage boy he left home and joined a touring repertory troupe followed by appearing in vaudeville in a song and dance team called, “Stone and Strain”.  Soon he was working on the stage in Broadway in a number of productions.
 
After gaining some experience as a stage actor, Stone decided to relocate to Los Angeles, California and see if he had any luck working in the film industry.
 
It took a while for his career to take off, mostly working in films for Monogram Pictures in small un billed parts.  It was not until 1937 that he was cast as the lead in the film, “Federal Bullets” followed by decent roles in the films, "Mr. Lincoln” (1939), “The Great Alaskan Mystery” (1944) and “The Master Key” (1945).  Soon he was signed with Universal Pictures and did a number of features with them.
 
Soon he was offered a recurring role as the character role of Doc Adams in 1955 on the series, “Gunsmoke” for a total of a twenty year run on over 500 episodes and even winning an Emmy in 1968.

When he finally retired from acting he earned his doctorate from St. Mary of the Plains College in Kansas.
 
Milburn was married a total of three times throughout his lifetime, first to Ellen Morrison from 1925 through 1937 and together they had one child together.  He then married his second wife, Jane Garrison in 1939 and they actually divorced after one year but then remarried in 1941 and remained married until he passed away from a heart attack on June 12th, 1980 in La Jolla, California. 
 
He received a number of honors throughout his career such as being inducted into the Hall of Great Western Performers of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in 1981 and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contribution to Television.
