MARTHA SCOTT BIOGRAPHY & FILMOGRAPHY:
Martha Scott was born on September 22nd, 1912 in Jamesport, Missouri with the birth name Martha Ellen Scott to parents Letha and Walter Scott. Her first introduction to the entertainment industry was working as a stage actress in stock theater. She earned her degree in drama from the University of Michigan in 1934 and then decided to enter the film industry in the early 1940's.
Her film debut was in "Our Town" (1940) also starring William Holden, Fay Bainter, Beulah Bondi, Thomas Mitchell, Guy Kibbee and Frank Craven, playing the same character she played on stage. She ended up being nominated and won an Academy Award for her performance as Best Actress. Some of her other film work were in such big screen features as, "The Ten Commandments" (1956), "Ben-Hur" (1959) both starring Charlton Heston and "The Turning Point" (1977) starring Anne Bancroft and Shirley MacLaine.
Even though she never reached her true level of popularity and stardom, she was a very talented actress. One of her most memorable performances was in the film "Airport 1975" (1974) co-starring Charlton Heston, Karen Black, Susan Clark, Efrem Zimbalist Jr. and George Kennedy.
As her career progressed she worked in films as well as making a number of television appearances on such series as "Route 66" (1961-1962), "Ironside" (1969), "Colombo" (1975), "The Love Boat" (1979) and "Murder, She Wrote" (1987).
Along with a decent film and television resume she also was responsible for partnering with actors, Robert Ryan and Henry Fonda in 1968 and forming a theatrical production company, Plumstead Playhouse in New York.
Martha Scott married twice throughout her lifetime. Her first time to wed was in 1940 to a radio and film producer Carlton Alsop whom she had one son, Scott, before the marriage ended in divorce in 1946. Her second marriage was to Mel Powell in 1946 through his death in 1998 and she had two daughters with him.
Scott did not remarry for a third time and on May 28th, 2003 she passed away at the age of ninety in Van Nuys, California from natural causes. She is buried at Masonic Cemetery, Jamesport, Missouri, next to her husband, Mel Powell.
