He began his training attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and then found work as a stage actor with his stage debut in, "Brother Rat" in 1936 followed by a role on Broadway in, "The Flying Gerardos" (1940).  He was seen by a scout for Paramount and  signed to a three year film contract.
His film debut was in, "No Man of Her Own" (1950) and then began appearing on mostly western films such as, "Denver and Rio Grande" (1952), "The Great Sioux Uprising" (1953), "Drums Across the River" (1954), "The Lone Ranger" (1956) and "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" (1957).

In 1974, Bettger moved to Paia which was located on the island of Maui and six years later he retired completely from the industry.  Lyle Bettger married only once in 1940 to radio and stage actress, Mary Rolfe and they had three children together, Lyle Jr, Frank and Paula and remained together until she passed away in 1996.
