Luther Adler ACTOR


Luther Adler was born on May 4th, 1903 in New York City, New York with the birth name Lutha Adler. His parents were Jacob P. and Sara Adler and he along with his five other siblings all became involved in the acting arena. His father, Jacob was regarded as one of the great American Actors of the Yiddish-Language Theater. He operated his own theater in New York and his children all began to gain their stage experience at their father's theater.
Some of Adler's earlier stage credits included roles in the productions, "The Hand of the Potter", Street Scene", "Red Dust" and the Broadway play, "Humoresque. Soon he also began adding a number of film credits to his resume such as, "Lancer Spy" (1937) starring Dolores del Rio, Joseph SChildkraut, George Sanders, Lionel Atwill, Peter Lorre and Sig Ruman, "Cornered" (1945) starring Walter Slezak, Dick Powell and Jack La Rue, "Saigon" (1948) starring Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake, "The Loves of Carmen" (1948) starring Rita Hayworth, Glenn Ford and Victor Jory and "Wake of the Red Witch" (1948) starring John Wayne, Gail Russell, Paul Fix, Duke Kahanamoku, Adele Mara, Eduard Franz, Grant Withers and Gig Young.
Although over the course of his career he would continue to appear on television and film, he was still always regarded as a stage actor. He even added directing credits to his resume such as on the Broadway play, "A Flag is Born", "They Should Have Stayed in Bed", "Angel Street" and "A View from the Bridge".

Towards the end of his career more prominent film roles included, "D.O.A." (1950) starring Edmond O'Brien, Pamela Britton, Laurette Luez, Beverly Garland, Neville Brand and William Ching, Fritz Lang's "M" (1951) starring David Wayne, Howard Da Silva, Steve Brodie, Raymond Burr, Jim Backus, Norman Lloyd and Walter Burke, "The Last Angry Man" (1959) starring Paul Muni, David Wayne, Billy Dee Williams, Joby Baker and Godfrey Cambridge, "The Man in the Glass Booth" (1974) starring Maximilian Schell, Lois Nettleton and Lawrence Pressmanand "Absence of Malice" (1981) starring Paul Newman, Sally Field, Wilford Brimley and Bob Balaban.

Luther Adler also appeared on such television series as, "Naked City", "The Untouchables", "Route 66", "Ben Casey", "Hec Ramsey" and "Hawaii Five-O".

He married twice throughout his lifetime, first briefly to Julia Roche and when that marriage came to an end he married Sylvia Sidney in 1938 and they had one child before divorcing in 1946. He did not re-marry and on December 8th, 1984, Adler passed away in Kutztown, Pennsylvania at the age of eighty one.
